Begin your South America explorations with a visit to the legendary Inca and Spanish colonial cities of Peru — and you’ll add a fifth country to your journey in the process! You’ll enjoy a scenic train ride to Machu Picchu, the legendary "Lost City of the Inca," and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. You’ll also visit Peru’s capital cities of yesterday and today: Cuzco — former capital of the Inca Empire and later a Spanish colonial stronghold — and Lima, the modern capital once known as the “City of Kings.”

Trip Extension Itinerary

DAYS 1-2: Miami / Overnight Flight / Lima / Cuzco / Sacred Valley, Peru

Your Peruvian discoveries begin as you depart on an evening flight from Miami, headed for Lima, then on to Cuzco. When you arrive on Day 2, you'll be transferred to your hotel in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 3 : Sacred Valley

Set off on a full-day tour to Ollantaytambo, a lovely town overlooked by a remarkable Inca fortress. Then, rub shoulders with the locals as we drop into a chicheria (traditional household tavern) for a glass of chicha, the maize beer of the Andes. After lunch at a local restaurant, stop in Chincheros to enjoy a backstrap loom weaving demonstration.

DAY 4 : Sacred Valley / Machu Pichu / Sacred Valley

Today, you'll head for Machu Picchu, the famous archeological site of the New World. Board a Vistadome train for a scenic journey to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, enjoy a guided walking tour of the mysterious Inca ruins. Return by train to Ollanta, then continue back to your hotel in the Sacred Valley by motorcoach.

DAYS 5-6: Sacred Valley / Cuzco

On Day 5, your explorations continue in Cuzco, the first capital of the Inca Empire. Embark on a full-day Cuzco tour, including a visit to the Sacsayhuaman fortress, where some of the most astonishing examples of Inca stonework can be seen. Afterwards, you'll join a local family in their home for lunch.

You're free on day 6 to explore Cuzco's many sites on your own. If you like, you can take an optional "Cuzco Behind the Scenes" tour. This evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, with entertainment.

DAY 7 : Cuzco / Lima

Today, you'll fly to Lima, once the richest and most opulent city in Spain's New World. You'll discover the former colonial glory on a panoramic sightseeing tour. You'll visit the great square, Plaza Mayor, government palace, the Cathedral, and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

DAY 8 : Lima / Santiago, Chile

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Santiago, and then transfer to Santa Cruz to join Day 2 of the base program.
