Holy City of Kairouan Tour (tun08)

Kairouan (the “fortified town” in Arabic) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known as the spiritual home of all Tunisians. You’ll depart from your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle, accompanied by an English-speaking guide, for the hour’s drive. When you arrive, you’ll explore this holy city’s historic sites, including the Great Mosque, parts of which were first built in the 7th century. Inside, admire the exquisite hand-carved doors and stucco arabesques, and take note of the 400 columns in the prayer room.
Your visit will not be complete without a walking tour of the Medina, the old city center. With its imposing walls and monumental gate, the Medina encompasses lovely mosques, an ancient well, and hundreds of shops where world-famous Kairouan carpets of pure wool are woven and sold. In fact, Kairouan is the oldest and most renowned carpet center in Tunisia. Here you will visit a carpet venue to watch carpets being loomed, and learn how carpets are graded by the fineness of their knots. Discover how Tunisian craftsmen have successfully blended traditional Tunisian patterns with modern designs, creating a new line of outstanding knotted carpets.
