print friendly version

PACING: 2 nights in Amman, Jordan; 1 night in Petra, Jordan; 7-night Red Sea cruise; 2 nights in Alexandria, Egypt; 3 nights in Cairo, Egypt.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Most sightseeing done on air-conditioned coaches with guides. Moderate to heavy walking daily from the ship, at historical sites, and in museums, as well as quite a bit of walking on sloped and uneven natural terrain. Lots of steps at archeological sites and in museums. Expect high temperatures depending upon the departure date and the location. You should be active and in good health to experience this trip. Most sightseeing on your cruises is done in the AM when it is cooler, so there are a few early mornings for sightseeing. There are a few long, full-day transfers by motorcoach.

Please refer to Vantage’s wheelchair and handicapped traveller policy.

CULTURAL FOCUS: Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia require a heavy foreign culture adjustment for many. Travellers will at times encounter dust, pollution, heat, large crowds in larger cities, like Cairo, and visible poverty — all of which are part of the environment and culture. The different customs, foods, culture, and history are for many the most rewarding part of the experience. (The food on board the ships is compatible with American tastes.) For those up for it, these differences, as well as the beauty and the antiquity, make the region a uniquely rewarding destination.

SPECIAL FACTORS: Temperatures are at their highest along the Nile from April to October. An Egyptian visa is required for this program at an extra cost. Travellers taking the optional extension will also need to purchase a visa for Jordan. Travellers will fly from their home cities to JFK airport in New York, then will depart together on an early evening flight to Cairo. Due to airline schedules and luggage requirements, passengers arriving from several cities will require an overnight in New York at an additional cost before their flight from New York to Cairo.

Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia are Muslim countries. The consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden in the streets. It is advisable to respect local Muslim conservatism regarding dress and women in particular will be better respected if their legs and shoulders are covered in public places. It is advisable to ask permission before photographing people. Bargaining is expected with merchants especially in the markets. Religious customs should be respected, particularly during the month of Ramadan when eating, drinking and smoking during daylight hours should be discreet as it is forbidden by the Muslim culture.

Optional Jerusalem, Israel Extension: If you are on a departure that begins in Cairo and ends in Amman, then the Israel extension will be post-Amman. You will transfer by motorcoach from Amman to Jerusalem, and then depart from Tel Aviv for your return flight to the U.S. There is also a $45 per person departure tax upon leaving Israel.
