WOW, this trip exceeded our expectations! We visited small working villages along the river where life was simple and the people were friendly and very contented. Buddhas, Temples and Stupahs galore, and often in a place you would least expect seeing something so magnificent! The school age children enjoyed our visit as much as we enjoyed visiting, singing and bringing notebooks and pencils to them. The MANY modes of transportation ("James Bond" boats, Tuk Tuks, horse & buggy, Ox cart and trishaw, to name a few) we traveled by really added to our overall experience! We marveled as the staff of the Irrawaddy Explorer, literally carved out steps in the muddy river bank for us to climb up the steep hill, after walking the gang plank off the boat! (Not recommended for the physically challenged). The food on the Irrawaddy Explorer was traditional and delicious Burmese cuisine. And then, there were all the wonderful people we met and great friends we made and shared experiences! Wow! It was fantastic!

I THINK THE SINGLE WORK '"EXCELLENT" SUMS THINGS UP PERFECTLY.

I honest didn't know what to expect from this trip - first time travelling with Vantage but definitely not the last. From the reservation process to the accommodations, tour guides and actual tour - absolutely fantastic. We didn't use your air service so I can't comment on that - but most people we connected with were also extremely happy with everything.
The Burma tour is definitely a unique trip - an eye opener that leaves us a little humbled from the experience. But I would recommend this trip to anyone that wants a different experience, executed perfectly by an excellent tour company.

When I heard that many of our fellow travelers had previous travels with Vantage 2 to 22 times ... I knew we had chosen a good company.

Thanks Vantage!

Burma & the Irrawaddy River: Cruising the Road to Mandalay

Ours was a classic journey back in time. Vantage was a pioneer [a year ago] in the expeditions to Burma and the only one still [to our knowledge] offering an extended float down the fabled Irrawaddy River, We experienced a glimpse of what life may have been like in Southeast Asia a half century ago, since Burma had simply closed its doors to the outside world 30-plus years ago. The boat, the Pandaw 2, looked like a river boat of Kipling's "old flotilla' of the Road to Mandalay fame, but fitted out with most of the comforts of home served by a most solicitous crew. We understand that the Pandaw will be replaced by a more luxurious boat in 2014.

Burma and the Burmese people are wonderful! We stopped at small villages on the Irrawaddy and were greeted like stars! Burma is still very primitive but am sure it will change quickly. It is a lovely country and the people are extremely industrious.. The program guide, Robin, was very knowledgeable and interesting. Visiting the pagodas and seeing their beauty was a highlight, especially the one in Yangon. The ship was nice and small and the crew was helpful and fun.

The entire experience was insightful and educational. It was interesting to see a part of the world that stood still for a number of years. We visited villages where the villagers had never seen people who were foreign. The village and small town people were warm, friendly, curious and had an innocence about them. The country and pagodas and stupas were amazing to see. They were everywhere! I would not recommend the end of March and first of April as the time to go, however. It was breathtakingly hot and extremely dry. The river was only 2 1/2 ft. deep in places. We learned November through January is the best time to go, right after the monsoons, not right before!

We loved this trip. The ship was comfortable and right in keeping with the environment. Traveling on the river is the only way to see Burma as the river is Burma. You see the true life of the Burmese people who are delightful!
