Very Different Cultural Immersion

Each Vantage Adventure is designed to help you fully experience local culture and to get out and explore while keeping active. We find these are the two most fulfilling and rewarding ways to transform any trip into an adventure. This trip is not for everyone, though, so we would like everyone to ask:

Is this Adventure right for you?

The following are some things to keep in mind before you embark on this adventure of a lifetime.

Physical Requirements

  • You must be able to walk 1-2 miles unassisted
  • Not appropriate for travelers using wheelchairs, walkers, or other mobility aids
  • Traveling in a safari vehicle over roads in poor condition can cause problems for travelers with back and leg pain
    • Not appropriate for travelers in need of a CPAP machine

Pacing

  • 7 locations in 14 days
    • Airport transfers in Nairobi can take up to 1 hour, depending on traffic

Terrain

  • Travel over bumpy, dusty terrain during overland transfers and game-viewing drives, and lodges and tents are built on uneven terrain

Transportation

  • Travel by small coach in Nairobi and 4x4 Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs in Kenya and Tanzania
  • Several 5- to 8-hour days in safari vehicles

Hotels

  • 13 nights in luxury Safari Lodges and a Tented Camp
  • All lodges have back-up generators for electricity with air-conditioning
  • At times there could be a 2- to 5-minute walk from reception/public area to rooms
    • All accommodations have en suite bathrooms

Food

Dining on Safari

Meals are predominantly buffet-style at your lodges throughout the Tanzania and Kenya safari tour, and may be created around various themes, including a barbecue dinner one evening. African safari meals usually feature Western food, with some special meat dish option — ostrich, warthog, venison, and crocodile — on occasion.

Welcome and Farewell Dinners

Our special welcome and farewell meals are festive affairs that celebrate your destination and revel in the shared experience of your small group. At Kirawira Luxury Tented Camp, we offer five-course, set-menu gourmet meals.

Here are some other things to keep in mind:

CULTURAL IMMERSION: East Africa's people are generally friendly and particularly welcoming to any visitor who can command a couple of worlds in Swahili. For the more adventurous traveler, there are many rituals, ceremonies, and festivals of traditional music, which are well worth experiencing. There are large numbers of Muslims, Christians, and Hindus as well as a strong following of traditional African beliefs in country areas. It is customary to ask permission before taking a photo of a local person, and from time to time locals will request a fee to take their photo. There are many shop outlets geared to tourists which sell a wide range of curios, clothing, wood carvings, and Maasai handmade jewelry. However, as with any city/town, please be VERY careful when shopping, do not wander around at night in towns (use taxis), and do not leave valuables in hotel rooms, etc.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Please note that this is an active tour and is not wheelchair friendly. Travelers will use many kinds of transportation, including planes, motorcoaches, and 6-passenger 4x4 wildlife safari vehicles. There is easy to moderate walking on this African safari tour. Surfaces encountered will include dirt roads, paths, paving stones, and tile. Rough roads mean bumpy rides, so this tour is not appropriate for passengers with neck or back troubles. Nairobi airport can be tiring, especially with security lines, check-ins, and the prevalence of marble floors.

PACING:  All transportation is by motorcoach and 6-passenger wildlife safari vehicles, each providing guaranteed window seating with pop-up roofs for photo-taking. Vantage will provide African safari bags for this journey, as there are weight and size restrictions on luggage in the vehicles. Roads in East Africa can be very poor and rough, especially after rain. Travel speed throughout your African safari tour is greatly reduced for safety and comfort, and distances can be tiring and very bumpy at times.

Important Notice: The above day-by-day itineraries are preliminary and therefore subject to change. If changes occur while on tour, you will be notified by your Vantage Tour Director or regional expert.

Please Note: The hotels listed are preliminary and subject to change. Although we contract our hotels a year in advance, unforeseen situations do occasionally occur. Should it be necessary to change a hotel, one of equal quality and value will be substituted. You will receive verified hotel information with your final itinerary. That hotel ratings are based on the Hotel and a leading travel industry authority on hotels throughout the world.
