Activities & Cultural Immersion
This trip is rated Moderate
Our days include a mix of active exploring and free time, and two full days of leisure. There is some limited daily walking through museums and city and countryside attractions, and you can expect to be on your feet for not more than an hour or so at a time. Some locations (such as Nakhal Fort) include sandy, cobbled or uneven terrain and perhaps some short uphill climbing and steps. We travel between sites aboard an air-conditioned private motorcoach, and for some city sightseeing we use local abra boats and the Dubai Monorail. There are two short internal flights, and one overland transfer from Dubai to Abu Dhabi that takes about 90 minutes. During our desert 4x4 adventure, we’ll ride all-terrain vehicles across the dunes, and the ride can be hilly and quite bumpy. You will have the chance to swim in the ocean and may also have the option of riding a camel or a bike. Please refer to Vantage's wheelchair- and handicapped-traveler policy as this journey does have some physical limitations.
Our destinations are among the wealthiest countries on Earth whose sophisticated infrastructures include top-quality accommodations and tourist facilities. You will enjoy a luxurious standard of comfort and warm, traditional Arabic hospitality. Remember that our hosts come from nomadic cultures where treating all guests with generosity and respect is a long-held value.
There are nonetheless some cultural differences you should be mindful of. These are very religious societies whose standards of conduct are very conservative. Moreover, they are absolute monarchies whose laws are strictly obeyed and enforced. Please wear modest dress, especially since much of our exploration includes visits to religious sites and mosques where bare arms and legs are not permitted for either sex. Women will also be required to cover their heads when entering mosques. We advise wearing long pants or capris, avoiding shorts and tank tops. Local people will very much appreciate your being respectful of their customs.
You will have several opportunities to go behind the scenes and encounter the everyday life of the people, such as when we visit the fishing community of Seeb; call at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital and talk with the staff; explore the village of Nakhal and the surrounding date palm oasis; and when an Omani woman joins us to offer insights on local life and the role of women.
