What to Expect
Each Vantage Adventure is designed to help you fully experience local culture and to get out and explore while keeping active. We find these are the two most fulfilling and rewarding ways to transform any trip into an adventure, and into the experience of a lifetime. To that end, we’ve rated each trip to indicate the level of cultural immersion and physical activity, with “1” being the lowest and “3” being the highest.
CULTURAL IMMERSION: South America requires little to moderate cultural adjustment for most travelers. The different people, customs, foods, culture, and history are what make South America such a rewarding destination.
PACING: With your included overnight flight to Santiago, Chile, this is an 11-night land-based adventure with 3 nights at a hotel in Puerto Varas; 2 nights at a hotel in Punta Arenas; 4 nights at an all-inclusive eco-resort in Puerto Natales; and 2 nights at a hotel in Santiago. Each day blends included sightseeing and activities with free time; there are also two free evenings and free time in Santiago during which you may relax or explore on your own, or on optional tours.
ABOUT YOUR FLIGHTS: Your flight to South America will connect through Miami. Since flights from Miami to Santiago depart late at night, depending upon your home city you may have a shorter or longer layover in Miami before your flight takes off. Your travel within Chile has been planned to minimize long transfers and maximize your exploring time, and to allow the most relaxed stay (four days) at the all-inclusive Hotel Remota. Expect three internal flights: from Santiago to Puerto Montt (four hours nonstop,) Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas, and Punta Arenas to Santiago. In Patagonia, overland transfers between sites may cover long distances. For example, our transfer from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales takes about three hours. However, we have planned your transfers to include frequent stops for rest and sightseeing, and we use only modern, air-conditioned motorcoaches to assure your comfort.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Lots of sightseeing takes place on foot, but some will occur aboard air-conditioned motorcoaches, and aboard two excursion vessels. Some of our motorcoach transfers include short stretches of bumpy, unpaved and dusty roads. By foot, we cover some moderately rugged paths, and for some hikes we walk in areas without trails. We will also board small boats for two nature excursions. In Puerto Natales, you will have a choice of two included but elective activities: horseback riding or hiking. Should you choose to forego these you can relax or explore independently; your Adventure Leader will be happy to suggest alternate activities for your free time.
SPECIAL FACTORS: Though you may not experience cultural adjustment in South America, Patagonia travel will, however, require some climate adjustment! When going on a Patagonia vacation, you can't be sure of sunny weather — strong winds, rains, and cooler temperatures may occur at any time of the year. Please refer to Vantage's wheelchair and handicapped traveler policy as this journey does have some physical limitations.
