For many travelers, fifty years of marriage is a milestone that calls for a big celebratory trip. The question becomes: where to go? For Donald Camp and his wife Marie, they were prepared to compromise, but it turns out they didn’t even need to. “I’d always wanted to go to the Galapagos, and my wife always wanted to go to Machu Picchu,” he said. The choice was made: Vantage’s Legendary Machu Picchu & the Galapagos Islands. There were a number of highlights for Donald. For one, he was enamored with Darwin’s finches when he was exploring the Galapagos Islands. “I had read about them in high school, but it was interesting to see them and their unique beak structure. That was one of the species Darwin based his theory on.” But the real highlight happened on the day they were married 50 years earlier. “Actually being on Machu Picchu on the day of our 50th anniversary was a highlight,” he said. “It was wonderful. And the whole group celebrated our anniversary with us. Vantage was very attentive, and they even made a video for us.” For Donald, there was something special about experiencing this former Incan city in the rarefied air of the Andes. “I enjoy explorations of things that are outside of my culture,” he said. “Machu Picchu is a beautiful monument to what human beings can do. And it’s artistic. There are some pieces there that are beautiful conceptual art pieces.”

In addition to the memorable moments atop Machu Picchu, there were the connections they made with the locals. “One woman brought us some tasty Peruvian potatoes, and a local shaman gave us gifts,” he said. He appreciated that these interactions were done in a respectful way. “It wasn’t a show; it was participatory. We were treated like travelers, not tourists.” That’s a point that was important to Donald, as he and his wife often travel independently. But there’s a benefit to traveling with Vantage, especially on a trip like Legendary Machu Picchu & the Galapagos Islands. “I kind of knew that the height might be an issue on Machu Picchu. We’re both healthy, but it was good to know that if you’re out of breath, someone can take your bag for you. And on some trips, it’s nice to be spoiled a bit.” Now that he and his wife are retired, Donald said, “We make a point of taking at least two trips a year.” Next up: France. “My wife is from France. We go back and visit family. I realized I have never taken a tour of France while we have been there, so we’re going on the Normandy trip with Vantage.” The Peru and Ecuador trip is still on his mind, though. So what would Donald say to someone who was thinking of embarking on an anniversary adventure with Vantage? Go. “It’s worth it,” he said. “It’s definitely worth it.”
