Bran Castle was home to many famous rulers, but it is most famous as the fictional home of Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula. Visit this magnificent castle on our Grand European Sojourn river cruise extension to Transylvania, Romania.

This historic fortress dates back to 1388, although it is now a museum and no longer a home to kings and queens. Admire the art and furniture collected over time by Queen Maria, and the medieval village and its rugged mountainous landscape. Walk in the footsteps of the fictitious Count Dracula, and who knows . . . you may learn a thing or two about vampires and werewolves.

On our Majestic Rivers of Europe: Castles, Cathedrals, & Fairytales cruise, travel across the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, and admire mesmerizing castles and cathedrals along the way. But, if you’re up for a little bit more ghastly fun, our 2019 trip extension to Czech Republic offers an optional tour to the village of Kutna Hora. Here, you’ll visit Sedlec Ossuary — commonly called the Bone Church, for it’s decorated almost entirely in the remains of human skeletons. Marvel at a chandelier of bones — one from almost every part of the human body, including skulls. It’s estimated that the remains of some 40,000 people have their permanent resting place here.

The colorful town of Vardo, just eight miles from Russia, is also home to a mysterious past. The United States may be known for the Salem Witch Trials, but Norway had its own Vardo witch trials. You can learn about the fascinating historical story from 1621 on departures of our Coastal Norway: The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage. You’ll get a chance to see a magnificent fortress that dates back to the 14th century and walk through the memorial dedicated to witch-trial victims. Do not miss out on this spell-tacular adventure!
