Today you’ll learn about Torgau with an insightful guided tour that illuminates more of this historic city where Russian and U.S. forces first met near the end of WWII, on April 25, 1945. Your discoveries will include a small collection highlighting the unique time period from 1949 through 1990, when the German Democratic Republic was a satellite state of the Soviet Union. Stroll the historic town center, before heading back to your ship for a scenic cruise along the Elbe River.

Cultural Connection: This evening after dinner, be enchanted by live onboard entertainment. Get ready for an entertaining lecture on “Katharina von Bora & the Debutante Ball” featuring the costumed wife of Martin Luther in an entertaining presentation on the music and dress of her era.

DAY 9:

Walk in the park, and in Martin Luther’s footsteps

This morning’s discoveries are in Wittenberg, famous for one very special resident: Martin Luther. This German priest forever changed the face of the faithful in 1517 when he nailed his Theses to the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg, igniting the Protestant Reformation. You’ll visit his home today — a UNESCO site — and witness other important UNESCO markers: the Martin Luther memorial, and, if time allows, the historic Stadtkirche, where the first Mass was celebrated in German (not Latin) and where the congregation was able to partake in the bread and wine ceremony, now common practice in Catholicism, but unheard of in the 16th century.

In the afternoon, you'll visit the Garden Kingdom Dessau-Wörlitz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you'll tour the Castle Wörlitz and view the beautiful grounds surrounding it. Then embark a weather-dependent gondola cruise before heading back to your ship.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 10:

Medieval splendor in Tangermünde awaits

This morning you’ll cruise on the Elbe, and in the afternoon dock in the medieval town of Tangermünde, whose well-preserved city walls and historical buildings will enchant you on an included walking tour. Get out your camera to capture the unique brickwork of high-gabled City Hall on the tour, with insightful local commentary. You’ll also have free time, and you can see St. Stephen’s Church, featuring one of Europe’s most splendid organs, or perhaps you’ll grab a coffee for some extra energy to stroll to the castle. This evening is your Captain’s Farewell Cocktail Party and Dinner.

Cultural Connection: This morning you’ll also be treated to a lecture on Tangermünde’s role as a wealthy Hanseatic city. Although it later decreased in economic performance, that contributed to its charming architecture dating back hundreds of years, due to lack of redevelopment.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 11:

Imperial splendor awaits in Potsdam

Transfer by motorcoach to Potsdam this morning. Formerly the residence of emperors and kings, Potsdam retains many vestiges of its imperial splendor, and its parks and palaces are collectively a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, your guided tour features a photo opportunity at Sanssouci, the fabulous landscaped park where King Friedrich II often sought retreat in one of many palaces. Then, take a guided tour inside the Cecilienhof Palace, where the Potsdam Conference was held in 1945. Enjoy lunch on your own, then transfer to check into your Berlin hotel.

Included Meals:

Breakfast

DAY 12:

Explore Berlin’s dark past and its renaissance

Once divided by the Berlin Wall, the city of Berlin is now reunited, and has emerged as Europe’s vibrant capital of innovation. One of the crowning glories of the rejuvenated city is the restored Tiergarten, the great central park that almost succumbed to damage and neglect, both during and after the war. Take time to stroll through it today, or opt for a special day with a bike-rental — how most locals get around — and cover more ground, including Berlin’s trendy restaurant scene.

On a city tour, get an overview of this vibrant city as you follow Berlin’s grand boulevards to such landmarks as Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, and the trendy district of Tempelhof, best known for its decommissioned airport that was once a site of Nazi rallies and the Berlin airlift. Today it’s a huge park with picnic areas, gardens, and paths for cyclists. Cultural Connections: Your tour includes entrance to the grim yet fascinating “Topography of Terror” exhibit, which is located at the Berlin Wall Memorial. In it, the story of Nazi repression is revealed as you pass through the excavated remains of the Gestapo and SS headquarters.

The rest of the day is at your leisure, or you can participate in our WWII & Cold War optional tour, which includes the Allied Museum and its fascinating British transport plane as well as a nuclear bomb shelter. In the evening, savor one final Farewell Dinner with your fellow travelers at the hotel.

Included Meals:

Breakfast & Dinner
Optional Tour: WWII & Cold War

WWII & Cold War

  • Approximate Time: 3.5 hours
  • Location: Berlin, Germany
  • When: Afternoon tour
Be transfixed by fascinating historical content with a WWII & the Cold War optional tour that brings you to the Allied Museum of Berlin. Afterwards, visit a nuclear bomb shelter and imagine yourself as one of the 3,592 people who could fit into this space that’s tucked below a hopping nightclub.
