Despite its size, Rotterdam is a surprisingly intimate city, as you will discover on this optional walking tour. In addition to its innovative architecture and exceptional dining establishments, this charismatic city is known for its sophisticated shopping venues, spirited nightlife, and trendy art scene. One of the city’s most dynamic structures is the bustling Market Hall, the largest indoor market in Holland, hosting more than 120 food vendors and restaurants. From fresh bread and locally-produced cheese to fresh-caught seafood and fragrant flowers, you’ll find it all under one roof. We’ll make a stop here and savor a selection of local specialties.
On this optional excursion, you’ll head to the historic village of Veere for a guided walking tour. This delightful destination, founded in the late 13th century when Wolfert Van Borssele established a ferry house here (“veere” is Dutch for “ferry”) is full of interesting buildings dating back several centuries. Stroll along the picturesque and colorful waterfront, and see the Campveerse Tower. This is one of Veere’s most prominent landmarks and the oldest surviving inn found in the Netherlands. Your tour will also include a tasting of one of the region’s most well-known delicacies: Zeeland oysters.
Located among the scenic, hilly landscape of Groesbeek, the Freedom Museum is an interactive attraction focused on the history of the second World War, and its significance and impact on the Netherlands throughout the 20th century and into the present day. The museum’s mission is to enlighten and educate visitors via a series of permanent exhibits, battlefield tours, and film screenings. Come face-to-face with the world’s second largest collection of Vincent Van Gogh masterpieces. Stroll one of the most expansive modern sculpture gardens in Europe, set on 25 hectares of outdoor space. See how the Futurists entered the European stage over 100 years ago and interacted with avant-garde artists such as De Stijl and Bauhaus. You’ll find all this and more at the Kröller-Müller national art museum and sculpture garden, founded in 1938 by renowned German art collector Helene Kröller-Müller.
Throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, French military commander and political leader Napoleon Bonaparte rose through the ranks of the French army, expanding his empire across central and western Europe. His reign finally came to end on June 18, 1815, when he was defeated by the combined forces of the Prussian and British armies, led by the Duke of Wellington. This engaging tour will shed light on this historic battle as you explore the site where it took place. You’ll see the Lion’s Mound, the most easily recognizable landmark of the Battle of Waterloo, erected between 1824 and 1826.
