One of the best-preserved old-world cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bruges is one of Europe’s most charming destinations. Experience its ancient cobbles and fairy-tale turrets for yourself, and learn about the city’s fascinating history as a capital for textiles and lace as you admire the view of centuries-old guild houses reflected off the shimmering waters of Bruges' meandering canals.
Transfer to Bruges
Disembark your ship and head to Bruges this morning, one of the world’s most remarkably preserved medieval cities. After checking into your hotel, dinner is on your own tonight.
Embark on a walking tour of Bruges and cruise its legendary canals
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, and then set out on a walking tour of Bruges. Explore the Market Square and see the iconic Church of Our Lady from the outside — its tower is the second-largest brickwork tower in the world, and truly a sight to behold. You'll also embark a canal cruise so you can witness the graceful arched bridges and charming gardens from the tranquil waters. Your afternoon is at leisure to stroll Bruges’ charming streets and admire medieval-era homes once owned by wealthy textile merchants. Perhaps stop in a lace workshop to see the intricate — and speedy! — work performed by the city’s finest artisans. Dine on your own at one of Bruges' fine restaurants. Later tonight, join your guide for a pub crawl to some of the city’s favorite spots, sampling Flemish red ales, and see why the nation’s beer culture has been recognized on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Discover the city’s magic on your own, or opt for some “Bruges Delights”
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, then a day at leisure to discover this magical city on your own. Or embark on an optional tour of Bruges Delights. This is a foray into the city's culinary treasures, and will take you to a chocolatier, a local pub for some beer tasting, and a stop for a delicious Belgian "lace cookie." This is an ideal excursion for those looking to taste some of the country's signature food and drink. Dinner is at the hotel.
Among the most famous “delights” are Belgian chocolates! Nothing like what you’ll find in other parts of the world, Belgian sweets are much richer and this world-renowned chocolate is a true treat. On this optional tour, hear how to make the perfect chocolate — while tasting some! You'll also sample light, crisp, and elegant lace cookies, which are named after the lace-like holes that form as they bake. But if the sweets don’t do it for you, the beers just might. This little country makes a lot of beer (almost 200 breweries reside here!) and really good beer, too — from Flemish reds to lambics, dubbels to blondes. You probably won’t be able to try them all, but while on cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to taste a few.
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, then transfer to the airport in Brussels for your flight home.
The 19th-century luminaries who once visited Montreux — such as Tolstoy, Nabokov, Flaubert, Dostoyevsky — were no doubt drawn by the pleasant climate, idyllic surroundings, and shimmering waters of Lake Geneva. This resort town remains an elegant escape, and you’ll experience its many charms on this extension. Enjoy a full-day tour of the Château de Chillon and Gruyère region — which includes some time at the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — as well as the opportunity to watch witness the art of cheese-making with a local family and visit a chocolatier. You’ll also have time on your own to explore Montreaux and nearby Gruyeres, and generally revel in the beauty of this lakeside gem. This vibrant city also happens to be an unofficial capital of jazz, as it is the home to the esteemed Montreux Jazz Festival.
