Contemporary and classic, Helsinki is all at once a study in opposites. Some of Europe’s finest art nouveau buildings dazzle the eye, but contemporary art museums beckon. Once part of Sweden, then Russia, Finland’s capital now has an identity all its own and you’ll discover it on an enriching three-night extension here to immerse yourself in the islands, peninsulas, and hidden coves that have collectively earned Helsinki the title of the “White City of the North.”
Extend your Gulf of Finland discoveries in Helsinki. Check out of your hotel this morning for a train ride to the capital of Finland. We’ll board the Allegro train to travel in First Class and enjoy a choice of cold snacks as well as a spacious and elegant ride while being whisked off to arrive in St. Petersburg. Upon arriving at your centrally located hotel, we will check in before heading out for an orientation walk.
White City of the North
This morning after breakfast in your hotel, depart for an included walking tour of the metropolis known as the “White City of the North” and see the Esplanadi, Market Square, Old Market Hall, Senate Square and more. A panoramic coach tour will include a stop at The Rock Church and Sibelius Monument. Afterwards, the rest of your day is yours to spend at leisure. Spread across various islands, peninsulas, and hidden coves, Helsinki is an unforgettable tapestry of fascinating architecture, historical treasures, and quirky charm. Perhaps you’ll explore the neoclassical buildings of ornate Senate Square — Finland’s Times Square — or the glittering domes of Uspenski Cathedral. Find a delicious lunch and dinner at local restaurants and cafés. Stroll through Esplanadi Park, flanked by a wide variety of shops, explore the range of Finnish art displayed at the National Gallery, or head for the city's open-air folk museum. Cultural Connection: You can also enhance your tour with an optional tour to visit with a local family in their home.
Today you have free time to explore Helsinki independently; perhaps you’ll check out nearby Porvoo, a charming medieval town with cobblestone streets that weave between historic wooden buildings. You can also enhance your trip with our optional tour to Suomenlinna, one of the world’s largest historic maritime fortresses. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a fascinating history dating back to the mid-1700s and is spread out on six islands linked by walking trails. Later, gather with your fellow travelers to toast to your trip and enjoy a Farewell Drink and Farewell Dinner.
Today you’ll enjoy breakfast before departing for the airport to fly home.
