Jazz music is a true American art form: a fusion of impressive technical skill, deft improvisation, and an unbridled passion for music. That’s one of the reasons we endowed the ms River Voyager — Vantage’s 6-star river ship — with a jazz theme, and why we’ve created a spectacular European river cruise with a remarkable soundtrack: Rhine Jazz Discovery. Your journey offers some of the best destinations in Europe and some of the best jazz music anywhere.

As you cruise between Amsterdam and Basel, you’ll discover some of the continent’s most beloved cities such as Cologne, Koblenz, and Strasbourg, France while enjoying some top-notch music along the way. One highlight will be an unforgettable tea and a jazz performance at the world-famous Bimhuis. Praised by professionals as one of the premier venues in the world for sound quality, this venue is a true jazz mainstay and a legend among those in the know. You’ll savor a two-part performance with a delightful tea at intermission. You’ll also enjoy fascinating lectures as well as regular jazz music onboard, whether it’s the evening’s entertainment (in a variety of jazz styles) or the onboard jazz pianist, who will play throughout your Rhine cruise.

When it comes to value, this journey can’t be beat — you simply would not be able to have all these experiences on your own at this remarkable price. There will be 15 included tours on your journey, introducing you to some of the region’s most fascinating cities and sites. You’ll also see five different UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the famed Cologne Cathedral and the vineyard-terraced hillsides of Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Plus, with our single occupancy cabins, solo travelers can enjoy a FREE Single Supplement.

And why not make the most of your time in Europe — not to mention maximizing your value — by adding an extension? Join us to experience the storybook charms of Bruges or enjoy a unforgettable stay in Montreux. The latter is a vibrant city that happens to be an unofficial capital of jazz, as it is the home to the esteemed Montreux Jazz Festival. More than five decades of brilliant performances mark the history of this remarkable event, which draws up to 200,000 people and featured luminaries such as Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and more. What better way to enhance your jazz discoveries than in an epicenter of this art form!

Join us for a special river voyage that enables you to sample the best of the Rhine River and of jazz music — including an extension to Montreaux, site of the world-famous music festival.

DAY 4:

Explore Cologne on a walking tour and try some local “Kölsch bier”

After a morning of leisurely cruising, the ms River Voyager arrives in Cologne. The city was founded in the first century and became the seat of Roman rule in the region known as Germania Inferior. Although it's now Germany's fourth largest city, Cologne preserves many fine medieval structures, including Romanesque churches, the city hall, and three of the city's 12 medieval gates. You'll get a feel for this mix of old and new on a city walking tour that will culminate at the massive twin-spired Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While you're here, you'll also visit a local brewery for a taste of this town's famous "Koelsch-Bier." You'll also enjoy some special jazz features today: an insightful lecture on jazz as well as a performance by a Dixie jazz band.

Biking Opportunity: Enjoy this scenic path along the iconic Rhine River, with terrific views of the Cologne Cathedral and Hohenzollern Bridge, during this easy 5-mile route. Click here for details

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 5:

A delightful walking tour of Old Town Koblenz and a wine tasting

Your next port of call is Koblenz, a more than 2,000-year-old city strategically set at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. From the wedge-shaped headland where the waters meet, known as Deutsches Eck or "German Corner," a giant equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I overlooks the united rivers. You'll enjoy a leisurely wine tasting before lunch on the ship, after which you'll embark for scenic cruising through the Upper Middle Rhine Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — as you travel towards Mainz. Your onboard entertainment continues to be as varied as it is excellent: in addition to the jazz pianist playing in the lounge, you'll enjoy a performance by a solo saxophonist.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 6:

A guided tour of Mainz, the famed Gutenberg Bible, and cruising UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge

This ancient city was once the seat of the Holy Roman Empire. However, Mainz is perhaps best known as the home of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of moveable type, who was ranked "The Man of the Millennium" in a book about the most influential people born between the 10th and 20th centuries. You'll set out on a walking tour that includes entrance to the fascinating Gutenberg Museum. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure back aboard the ship, where more jazz goodness awaits, including a lecture and a peformance by Tap & Jazz’s Long Term Affair Quartet.

DAY 7:

Highlights of Heidelberg, a singular treat, and enjoy leisure time in Speyer

Today, set off for a half-day excursion to Heidelberg, a red-roofed town on the Neckar River that is home to Germany’s oldest university. Enjoy panoramic views from the plaza of imposing Heidelberg Castle. Unforgettable Moment: You'll also see the castles famed Heidelberg Tun, an immense wine barrel, now empty, with a capacity of some 58,000 gallons. Afterwards, descend via funicular from the castle to the town center to stroll the pedestrian-only main street and get an opportunity to sample a traditional confection beloved in this region: the Heidelberger Studentkiss. Then we have opportunity to visit the cathedral town ofSpeyer, where you’ll have the afternoon at leisure to explore on your own. Back on the ship, we learn more about jazz during a lecture entitled "Milestones in the history of jazz."

After docking in Kehl, Germany, we'll go directly across the Rhine to Strasbourg, France via the Pont de l'Europe bridge. Unforgettable Moment: You'll embark on a walking tour that takes you to the elegant Palais Rohan; Cathedral Notre Dame; the ultra-modern European Union Parliament; the quaint shops and parks of “La Petite France”; and the Tanner’s Quarter. Explore the heart of Strasbourg's center city afternoon at leisure. More jazz music awaits back on board the ship.
