Until relatively recently, Myanmar (also known as Burma) was a closed society. Today, this once cloistered country is open to the world, and travelers can fully experience the brilliant tapestry of history and culture that was hidden from view.  Embark on this insightful, immersive Myanmar adventure and experience the legendary landmarks, intriguing traditions, and fascinating religious heritage of this nation before it inevitably changes.

For now, Myanmar remains remarkably unspoiled by tourism. Yet within its borders, thousands of astonishing antiquities await: a fascinating mix of Buddhist and colonial cultures; acres of temples topped with gilded stupas; and riverside villages that time has forgotten. Our Burma & the Irrawaddy River journey is a rare opportunity to explore one of the world’s least-traveled destinations during an Irrawaddy River cruise, combined with exciting explorations on land. You’ll enjoy 14 Included Features – including a visit to the ancient city of Pyu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site – as well as 10 Cultural Discoveries on this comprehensive tour.

Travel through dense jungles and past emerald rice paddies, visiting villages not reachable by road. Gaze out at the more than 3,000 temples and pagodas of Bagan, and marvel at the dazzling, 344-foot Shwedagon Pagoda.  Experience bustling cities, exotic villages, and gain an intriguing glimpse at the rich spiritual and cultural traditions here.  Join us on an unforgettable journey in Burma!

    DAY 5:

Trek to the Irrawaddy and embark the lush RV Markara Queen

This morning, we head to the Irrawaddy River, the country's most important waterway. The river's name comes from the Sanskrit meaning "elephant river," and it runs for nearly 1,350 miles through the heartland of Myanmar. On our way to the ship, we'll stop in Danuphyu, where we’ll visit a century-old monastery and stroll through the lovely botanical garden here as well as a traditional cigar factory. Then, we’re off to explore the market – where we can browse for souvenirs and interact with locals – and then to see several homes constructed during the British colonization of Burma.
