Depart home for Bergen, Norway
Your Nordic adventure begins with your overnight flight to Bergen.
Arrive in Bergen
After your arrival, transfer to your hotel in the heart of the city. Enjoy the remainder of your day in this historic port city at leisure. Later, join your fellow travelers at the hotel for a Welcome Drink and an informative briefing about the days ahead, followed by a light buffet dinner.
Uncover Bergen’s heritage before embarking your Hurtigruten cruise ship
Set out to discover the colorful city of Bergen on a tour. Our first stop is Bryggen Wharf, the city’s historic waterfront area. Built after the Great Fire of 1702, these traditional wooden houses and unusual street patterns inspired UNESCO to declare the city a World Heritage Site. Then, enjoy a fascinating look at Norway’s musical legacy with a visit to the home of Edvard Grieg. As one of the most influential Romantic composers of the 19th century, Grieg’s works helped launch Norway into musical prominence on an international level. We’ll learn more about his contributions during a tour of his home, now a fascinating museum. Later, you'll embark your Hurtigruten cruise ship and set sail on the cruise portion of your Nordic adventure.
Cultural Discovery: Because your ship is both a working and passenger vessel, your ship mates will be a mix of local and international travelers. This gives you the unique experience of connecting with not only Scandinavians, but people from across the globe as well. Hiking Opportunities: For those looking to explore the incredible nature of this region further, active travelers can soak in the astonishing seclusion and unspoiled natural landscapes by embarking on a series of guided hikes with a member of the Expedition Team.
Please Note: Your ship calls at many ports, and you'll often have time to go ashore for sightseeing. However, this is a working vessel that also delivers cargo on a strict schedule, and some port calls may not allow you any time on shore. Your Adventure Leader will keep your explorations active with port orientation walks wherever possible.
Cruise along Norway’s breathtaking natural splendor
Early risers will wake to the breathtaking splendor of the Nordfjord this morning before enjoying a delicious breakfast with fellow travelers. As we cruise past the West Cape, we experience a rare venture into open sea on our way to Ålesund. Depending on the departure date, we may sail past the spectacular cliffs and falls of the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord or explore Hjørundfjord, settled amidst the majestic Sunnmøre Alps. If weather allows, we’ll enjoy an extended visit in the art nouveau town of Ålesund, exploring the cobbled streets and colorful architecture during a guided walking tour. Later, we'll call on Molde, a town that was a trading port dating to the Middle Ages.
Hiking Opportunity: Enjoy sights of majestic peaks and soaring skies as you join an Expedition Team member on a guided hike through the secluded Sunnmøre Alps.
Uncover the medieval gems of Trondheim
After an early arrival in Trondheim, we’ll spend the day exploring this medieval jewel. As Norway’s historic and religious capital, Trondheim was once an important pilgrimage site for followers of St. Olav, a Norwegian king and Catholic martyr. Follow the city’s old veitene (narrow alleys) past its various markets and historic warehouses on a city walk and drive that includes a tour of the inside of the famous medieval Nidaros Cathedral. Back on the ship this afternoon, our cruise heads northwest, gliding past the beautiful Kjeungskjær lighthouse perched among numerous charming islets and rocky outcrops. After passing through the narrow Stoksund, the ship arrives at charming Rørvik, a busy fishing community that lies at the center of 6,000 islands.
Hiking Opportunity: Lose yourself in Trondheim’s incredible surrounding nature on an easy guided mountain hike with a member of your Expedition Team.
Sail across the Arctic Circle
Unforgettable Moment: Your Norway cruise ship passes the soaring Borvass Mountains across the Arctic Circle today. For summer departures, this travel milestone means that you will experience 24-hour daylight, known as the “midnight sun”. In winter, crossing the Arctic Circle is when the hunt for Aurora Borealis begins: being above this degree of latitude provides the best chances of experiencing the Northern Lights. We continue sailing along the beautiful coast of Helgeland and stop for a walking tour of at Bodø, a young city home to Norway's largest Air Force base.
As we cross Vestfjord this afternoon, the sight of the half-mile-high Lofoten Wall will appear on the horizon. The charms of the Lofoten Islands are revealed in the small, picturesque fishing villages of Stamsund and Svolvaer with their bohemian atmosphere. After sailing through the beautiful narrow Raftsund this evening, we pass the entrance to the enthralling Trollfjord, where you’ll hear the story of "The battle of Trollfjord," which took place here in the winter of 1890.
Explore the architecture of Tromsø, the "Gateway to the Arctic"
Lovely views await us as we cruise through the scenic Vagsfjord this morning. Our cruise ship will pause in the peaceful town of Finnsnes for a quick orientation walk before continuing to Tromsø, the gateway to the Arctic. This lively city is known for many things, from its distinctive architecture and endless supply of cultural events to its hallowed Mack brewery — famous for its Arctic Ale — and other pubs (in fact, Tromsø has more pubs per capita than any other town in Norway.) We’ll embark on a walking tour that takes us past various city gems, including a visit to the Arctic Cathedral. Want to explore further? Choose from a variety of optional activities and tours, from thrilling husky dogsled rides in the winter to kayaking excursions and peaceful hikes in the summer. Tonight, we’ll gather on deck in hopes of witnessing the spectacular Northern Lights.
Hiking Opportunity: While in Tromsø, join your Expedition Team for a nature hike through the surrounding mountains; the air up here is fresh and clear, and we get a beautiful view of the city and the impressive mountain chains around it.
Savor regional treats on North Cape
Witness magnificent sub-arctic landscapes as we cruise Norway’s northernmost region towards the North Cape. In summer months, you might see herds of grazing reindeer and small camps belonging to the indigenous Sámi people. After brief early stops in the peaceful fishing towns of Hammerfest and Havøysund, we’ll arrive in Honningsvåg, the gateway to the spectacular North Cape. Once docked, we’ll travel by coach to the North Cape Plateau to explore the exhibitions of North Cape Hall, a traveler center perched on the edge of a cliff. We'll enjoy a small treat of North Cake and coffee during our visit.
Step into the past during a visit to historic Vardø
Early birds can see the colorful town of Vardø this morning on our way to Kirkenes, land of Sámi and reindeer and the turnaround point on your Norwegian cruise. Located just 8 miles from Russia, this remote town was a tense area during the Cold War. We'll travel to Storskog, the only official border between Norway and Russia (you do not cross) and enjoy a short panoramic tour of Kirkenes. Cultural Discovery: Then, step into the past with a visit to Andersgrotta, a civilian bomb shelter from World War II, where we'll hear an illuminating retelling of historical events from a local. Later, we’ll stop in Vardø for a short walking tour, exploring its role in the inquisition during a lecture entitled “Witches and Pomors.” As our ship heads south, you’ll discover a completely different Norway cruise unfolding as you make daylight calls at ports passed in the night on the northbound trip.
Please Note: Winter and spring departures will explore the remarkable Snow Hotel after visiting the border instead of touring the bomb shelter.
Discover the towns of Hammerfest and Skjervøy
After early calls at Honningsvåg and Havøysund, your Norwegian cruise ship stops for a short walking tour of Hammerfest, the first European town to have electric streetlights. Heading south, we’ll arrive at the small village of Skjervøy in the evening. Today’s lecture explores the importance of Norway’s working history, from the fishing industry to the oil industry.
Please Note: While a variety of optional tours are available at these ports (depending on weather and schedule), the timing of the tours may conflict with one of Vantage's included features/excursions. Please keep this in mind when booking an optional tour.
Embark on a "Discovering Vesteralen" tour on nature-filled Hinnøya
Enjoy some of the most stunning scenery of your cruise this morning as we travel through the Vesteralen Islands via Stokmarknes, crossing the Raftsund Strait which connects Vesteralen with Lofoten. Our destination today is Harstad, a friendly town situated on nature-filled island of Hinnøya. Upon arrival, embark on a "Discovering Vesteralen" tour. Later, get a feel for local Nordic life as we spend some time with the owner of a family-run trading post that has been in business for years. Cultural Discovery: Our visit concludes with a tasty treat: a fluffy Arctic waffle served with tea of coffee.
Back on the ship, we’ll enjoy lunch as we cruise towards Sortland and Stokmarknes. Weather permitting, the ship will make a stop in Svolvær this evening, a fishing town with stunning mountains surrounding it.
Cruise past the Seven Sisters before exploring Brønnøysund
After leaving Ornes early this morning, our ship will sail through narrow straits bordered by farm fields. Crossing southward over the Arctic Circle, we’ll call at Sandnessjøen, an island port that is connected to the mainland by an impressive new cable bridge. As we cruise, you’ll enjoy excellent views of the Seven Sisters (weather permitting), a dramatic chain of seven peaks, as we make our way to Brønnøysund. Our lecture today celebrates the vivid style of Nordic poet Petter Dass. Upon arrival, you can join your Adventure Leader on a walking tour of this beautiful town, often referred to as "The Heart of Norway." Back on the ship this evening, experience the tradition of Norwegian folk dancing as you learn a few moves yourself!
Tour Trondheim and Kristiansund before embarking on “the world’s most beautiful drive”
Trondheim, Norway’s third-largest city, is a lively university town of colorful buildings and broad streets. We'll explore the gems of this destination during a walking tour. Returning to the ship for lunch, enjoy scenic cruising past the islands of Grip and Hitra. Our next stop is Kristiansund, a peaceful city that stretches across four islands. Unforgettable Moment: Then, we’ll embark on a drive down the Atlantic Road from Kristiansund to Molde. Known as “the world’s most beautiful drive,” this awesome feat of engineering stretches across the lush coastal landscapes of several islets and islands, providing simply incredible views of the surrounding ocean. Along the way, we’ll stop for our Farewell Dinner — an authentic and unforgettable Nordic culinary experience. Once in Molde, you have the option to embark on a short orientation walk before returning to the ship this evening.
Disembark ship for a final evening in Bergen
The cruise portion of your Norway adventure comes to an end today as you arrive back in Bergen by sailing through one of the most beautiful archipelagos in Norway. After enjoying lunch on board, you'll disembark and transfer to your hotel for the last night of your journey. Your last evening is at leisure in this colorful town; enjoy a light buffet dinner at the hotel or explore on your own.
