DAY 3:

Uncover Bergen’s heritage before embarking your Hurtigruten cruise ship

Set out to discover the colorful city of Bergen on a tour by coach, starting at our hotel next to Bryggen Wharf, the city’s historic waterfront area. Built after the Great Fire of 1702, these traditional wooden houses and unusual street patterns inspired UNESCO to declare the city a World Heritage Site. Then, enjoy a fascinating look at Norway’s musical legacy with a visit to the home of Edvard Grieg. As one of the most influential Romantic composers of the 19th century, Grieg’s works helped launch Norway into musical prominence on an international level. We’ll learn more about his contributions during a tour of his home, now a fascinating museum. Later, you'll embark your Hurtigruten cruise ship and set sail on the cruise portion of your Nordic adventure.

Please Note: Your ship calls at many ports, and you'll often have time to go ashore for sightseeing. However, this is a working vessel that also delivers cargo on a strict schedule, and some port calls may not allow you any time on shore. Your Adventure Leader will keep your explorations active with port orientation walks wherever possible.

Included Feature:

  • Panoramic tour of Bergen

Hiking Opportunities:
  • Hurtigruten offers a Hiking Pass for more active travelers. Revel in fjordland’s unspoiled natural landscapes with a series of guided hikes

Early risers will wake to the breathtaking splendor of the Nordfjord this morning before enjoying a delicious breakfast with fellow travelers. As we cruise past the West Cape, we experience a rare venture into open sea on our way to Ålesund. Depending on the departure date, we may sail past the spectacular cliffs and falls of the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord or explore Hjørundfjord, settled amidst the majestic Sunnmøre Alps. If weather allows, we’ll enjoy an extended visit in the art nouveau town of Ålesund, exploring the cobbled streets and colorful architecture during a guided walking tour.* Later, we'll call on Molde, a town that was a trading port dating to the Middle Ages.

Cultural Discovery:

  • Walking tour of Ålesund

Hiking Opportunity:
  • Join a guided hike through the secluded Sunnmøre Alps for vistas of majestic peaks and soaring skies

*Please Note: The walking tour of Ålesund depends on sailing schedule, and is not available on summer departure between June 1st and October 31st. Molde orientation tour on departures between June 1st and October 31st will be organized on southbound journey.

A Taste of Norway

  • Approximate Cost: $120 USD per person
  • Approximate Time: 2 hours 15 min
  • Location: Hjørundfjord
  • When: Day 4 (September 2 - November 1)
We arrive in Hjørundfjord by sea. Today, we will get “a taste of Norway” and see places that have fascinated visitors for centuries. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany visited this area several times. We anchor outside the village Urke, where a tender boat takes us to shore. We continue by bus through what is often referred to as “Norway’s narrowest valley” - Norangsdalen. Because of its shape and location, this valley is often closed in winter. Along the way we will stop and look at some spectacular places. One of them is Lyngstøl Lake. Here you can see sites of ancient settlements in the water that was naturally dammed in 1908 after a large landslide, a fascinating sight. We will also visit the historic Hotel Union Øye, which has played an important role in Norwegian history. Here we will provide you with local specialties and a drink.Next, we go to the community Urke which can offer local history in various forms. We guarantee a different experience in magnificent scenery.

Please note: Optional tours can only be prepurchased up to 30 days prior to departure. After that, tours may be purchased on-site (subject to availability.)

Hike with a Visit to a Shieling,

Hike with a Visit to a Shieling

  • Approximate Cost: $107 USD per person
  • Approximate Time: 2 hours 45 min
  • Location: Hjørundfjorden
  • When: Day 4 (September 2 - November 1)
Enjoy a pleasant hike in beautiful surroundings. Once we reach the Haukås shieling, the welcoming hosts will tell us about life on the farm. In the old days the farms in the village were very small, so it was important to utilize the outlying areas for summer grazing. Each year, the cows were moved to the summer farm where they grazed and were milked morning and evening. The grazing space was so far from the village that it was necessary to build shielings - houses for the milk maidens. The old farmhouses on Haukås were restored in the 1990s, and remind us of a bygone era. You will have time to explore the site on your own, and then taste the local delicacies. On our way back we will pass through the opposite side of the valley, and there is also time to visit the local general store before returning to the ship.

Please note: Optional tours can only be prepurchased up to 30 days prior to departure. After that, tours may be purchased on-site (subject to availability.)

  • Location: Geiranger - Molde
  • When: Day 4 (June 2 - September 1)
As with Geiranger Panorama, this excursion gets you closer to the UNESCO listed Geirangerfjord. Your day begins with a drive up Ørneveien (Eagle Road), enjoying magnificent views of Geirangerfjord en route to the beautiful Eidsdalsvatnet Lake. From there you take a picturesque ferry ride from Eidsdal to Linge. Back on dry land, we head for the stark, wild, high-alpine areas, stopping en route for photos at the impressive Gudbrandsjuvet (Gudbrands Gorge). One of the many highlights of this trip is the series of 11 hairpin bends down the winding Trollstigen Pass. Once you’ve reached the bottom, it’s time for a hot drink and a bite to eat before you continue on to the gentler landscape of the Romsdalsfjord. You conclude with dinner in Molde before embarking the Hurtigruten ship again.

Please note: Optional tours can only be prepurchased up to 30 days prior to departure. After that, tours may be purchased on-site (subject to availability.)

DAY 5:

Uncover the medieval gems of Trondheim

After arrival in Trondheim, we’ll spend the day exploring this medieval jewel on a bus tour. As Norway’s historic and religious capital, Trondheim was once an important pilgrimage site for followers of St. Olav, a Norwegian king and Catholic martyr. Follow the city’s old veitene (narrow alleys) past its various markets and historic warehouses on a city bus tour that includes a tour of the inside of the famous medieval Nidaros Cathedral. Back on the ship this afternoon, our cruise heads northwest, gliding past the beautiful Kjeungskjær lighthouse perched among numerous charming islets and rocky outcrops. After passing through the narrow Stoksund, the ship arrives at charming Rørvik, a busy fishing community that lies at the center of 6,000 islands.

DAY 6:

Sail across the Arctic Circle

Your Norway cruise ship passes the soaring Borvass Mountains across the Arctic Circle today. For summer departures, this travel milestone means that you will experience 24-hour daylight, known as the “midnight sun.” In winter, crossing the Arctic Circle is when the hunt for Aurora Borealis begins: being above this degree of latitude provides the best chances of experiencing the Northern Lights.

Cruising on along the coast of Helgeland, we’ll stop for a walking tour of Bodø, a young city that’s home to Norway's largest Air Force base. As we cross Vestfjord this afternoon, the sight of the Lofoten Wall (which is in fact a chain of the islands’ mountain peaks) will appear on the horizon. You’ll discover the charms of the Lofoten Islands in the small, picturesque fishing villages of Stamsund and Svolvær, with their bohemian atmosphere. After sailing through the beautiful strait of Raftsund this evening, you’ll find yourself at the entrance to Trollfjord. If the weather permits it, you may even sail through its incredibly narrow mouth — just 328 feet wide — to find dramatic, steep mountains looming over you at every turn. You’ll also hear the fascinating tale of “The Battle of Trollfjord,” which took place here in the winter of 1890.

Cultural Discovery:

This boat will then sail between islets and skerries whilst the guide tells you all about the area and the scenery – an impressive view best enjoyed out on the deck. It’s important not to forget your camera for this part because you will now be in the realm of the sea eagle, Europe’s largest predatory bird. Once we move on to the Svartisen Tourist Centre, you will be able to admire the beauty of this enigmatic ice world whilst enjoying a warm drink and the centre’s varied buffet of delicious cakes. Afterwards, you continue your journey along the beautiful coast of Helgeland back to Bodø where you rejoin the ship.

It was here the commercial part of the Lofoten fishery started more than 1000 years ago. In Kabelvåg we visit Gallery Espolin, which has the largest collection of the beloved artist Kaare Espolin Johnson’s works. He is known for his depiction of the sea, Lofoten and the fishermen’s hard life. Close to the gallery lies the Lofoten Museum where you can experience the local fishermen's history at one of the most preserved squires in Lofoten. Here, on the site of the medieval town Vågar, you’ll find the main building from the year 1815, authentic fishermen's cabins and boathouses featuring Nordland boats. Our last stop is Vågan Church in Kabelvåg, also known as the Lofoten Cathedral. The church was built in 1898 in the Gothic Revival style and is with its 1100-1200 seats one of Norway's largest.

Want to explore further? Choose from a variety of optional activities and tours, from thrilling husky dogsled rides in the winter to kayaking excursions and peaceful hikes in the summer. They invite you to a close and evocative encounter around the fire in their sami tent (lavvu), while reindeer graze outside. The family are reindeer herders, artisans and heralds of Sámi traditions. They will give you an insight into the challenges that reindeer herders and Sami culture are facing today. Through stories, chanting (joik), handicrafts and the serving of reindeer broth you will get a taste of Sámi culture.

We'll travel to Storskog, the only official border between Norway and Russia (you do not cross). Then, step into the past with a visit to Andersgrotta, a civilian bomb shelter from World War II, where we'll hear an illuminating retelling of historical events from a local. As our ship heads north west, you’ll discover a completely different Norway cruise unfolding as you make daylight calls at ports passed in the night on the northbound trip.

Several of the guides are active mushers with years of experience, so just sit back and enjoy the ride. The track we follow crosses frozen lakes and wide-open snowy plateaus, providing you with a genuine Arctic wilderness experience. If you're lucky, the northern lights will make a magical appearance. During spring, the sun returns, resulting in a different, yet equally exhilarating experience due to many more hours of daylight and a milder climate. Lofoten Islands

  • Approximate Cost: $130 USD per person
  • Approximate Time: 3 hours
  • Location: Svolvær - Stamsund
  • When: Day 11 (April 9 - August 31)
Throughout history Lofoten has been the home and workplace of generations of fishermen; indeed, the Lofoten fishing season, in spring is still vital to the people and the local economy. Many people associate Lofoten with its precipitous, dramatic and often fabled mountains, together with its picturesque fishing villages, but Lofoten is so much more. You’ll find quiet bays, white sandy beaches, sheltered fjords and, perhaps surprisingly, large green agricultural areas. It is said that the light in Lofoten is unlike anywhere else in the world, which is why artists from Norway and abroad have always come here for inspiration. In Henningsvær, we will visit a gallery where several Norwegian artists portray the beauty of the archipelago and we will also see a slide show that captures the unique atmosphere here. We will have a short photo stop, both before and after the visit, for you to fully take in the stunning scenery. Just find a good seat and enjoy the view!

Sea Eagle Safari

Sea Eagle Safari

  • Approximate Cost: $167 USD per person
  • Approximate Time: 2 hours
  • Location: Trollfjord - Svolvær
  • When: Day 11 (March 24 - October 15)
Just north of the Trollfjord is the realm of the sea eagle and it is here that a smaller vessel lies ready to take you out to see the king of the birds close up. First you accompany the Hurtigruten ship into the Trollfjord where you will see it turning around in the narrowest of spaces, a magnificent sight alone! The eagle safari begins in earnest when you leave the Trollfjord, starting with the gulls, which dive for fish right from your hand. You then pass through a narrow seaway flanked by a range of steep mountains. This is where the sea eagles dwell and can be viewed as they come flying in to get a share of the banquet. We let these beautiful, rare birds of prey circle the boat a few times, before we throw fish into the sea for them to dive in and collect. It’s all so close, so wild and so rare that some people forget to take pictures, but if you’re lucky, you may observe several majestic birds. From here the safari sets its course for Svolvær and you are left with the experience of seeing the King of Birds up close – memories that will stay with you forever.
