Copenhagen walking tour, free time to explore
Why do Danes consistently rank as “the happiest people in the world,” according to the UN’s World Happiness Report? Your panoramic tour of charming, friendly Copenhagen may give you a clue, as you view the famed Little Mermaid statue on her watery perch, visit the Nyhavn canal district, swing by towered and turreted Rosenborg Castle, and contrast that with the more-dignified Amalienborg Castle where Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II resides today.
Cultural Discovery: From renowned Noma restaurant to an up-cropping of other Michelin-starred gems, food has become Copenhagen’s main attraction! On a visit to a local food market, you’ll see what the locals are cooking up, while tasting the freshest fare and interacting with the people who live here, shop here, and grow the items sold here. Lunch is on your own here, too, and you can browse some 60 stalls for everything from tacos to tapas, sushi to salad. After, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, with dinner on your own so you can experience more of what this gastronomical capital is doing.
Explore Copenhagen on your own
Enjoy more free time to explore Copenhagen on your own. Lunch and dinner are on your own today, which is a golden opportunity to try a Michelin-starred restaurant or a few smørrebrød, famous Danish open-faced sandwiches, traditionally savored with a beer or aquavit. Throughout the day, your fellow cruise tour travelers will be arriving. You’ll meet them this evening at a Welcome Briefing and Dnner. Tomorrow, as they acclimate with a city tour, you still have one more included feature of your pre-trip extension to enjoy: your morning excursion to Dragør.
Visiting Dragør village
This morning we set off for an excursion to Dragør, a picturesque fishing village on the outskirts of Copenhagen. Your guide will escort you along the narrow, cobbled lanes lined with yellow houses and red-tiled rooftops, and we’ll pause to sample some local refreshments. Back in Copenhagen, the balance of the day is free. Perhaps you’ll be inspired at the Danish Museum of Art and Design, or shop along the Strøget pedestrian zone. Tomorrow, you will rejoin your larger base tour group and proceed with Day 4 of your Copenhagen-Poole cruise tour.
