During the Byzantine era, the city became an important center for commerce, prompting the construction of Patras Castle, designed to protect its inhabitants from foreign invasions. Dubbed Greece's “gate to the west,” the port of Patras is an important hub for trade and communication with Western Europe. The city is notable for its large annual carnival, featuring colorful parades and extravagant balls. Patras is also well-regarded for supporting a community of local artists and literati.
