Depart home for Portland, Maine

Overlooking Casco Bay, Portland is home to a wealth of historical and architectural masterpieces. Portland has an extensive nautical history that has been preserved throughout the centuries. Established by the British in 1632 as a fishing settlement, the town quickly became a mecca for shipping and trading companies. Big-city excitement blends delightfully with small-town charm as fishing vessels bustle in the harbor and Victorian-era buildings still line cobblestone streets. From classical to cutting-edge, the performance and visual arts are vibrantly alive in the city and infuse the region with excitement and sophistication. Upon arrival, enjoy a Welcome Briefing by your Cruise Director in the hotel.

Exploring Portland’s charms

Enjoy the earlier part of the day free, perhaps exploring the Old Port area with its many shops and restaurants, then board ship in the afternoon. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner as we depart on our scenic cruise for points north.

Tour historic Halifax and lunch in lovely Peggy’s Cove

Our illuminating tour of Halifax begins with a visit to the picturesque Citadel, a star-shaped defense structure constructed in 1856 to defend the city from invading forces. This unique building is now populated by the 87th Highlander Regiment, which regularly performs reenactments inside the square. We’ll also pay a visit to the Halifax Museum of the Atlantic, an exceptional glimpse into Nova Scotia’s maritime heritage. On our way out of town, we’ll pass the Fairlawn Cemetery, where we’ll hear the compelling tale of how 100 of the RMS Titanic victims were recovered and buried. Continuing down the craggy coast, we’ll arrive at Peggy’s Cove, a lovely maritime village on St. Margaret’s Bay, just in time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a free afternoon to explore the town’s colorful homes, eclectic waterfront district, and iconic lighthouse.

Unearthing Prince Edward Island’s cinematic roots

Prince Edward Island, Canada's tiniest and most charming province, is famous for its green fields, red earth, and white-sand beaches. During our excursion to historic Charlottetown, we’ll follow a trail through the same historic streets the delegates walked when they gathered in 1864 for the conference that led to the Confederation of Canada. Then, we’ll drive along the North Shore to Cavendish Bay, Prince Edward Island National Park, and the farmstead that inspired L.M. Montgomery’s beloved Anne of Green Gables. Enjoy free time strolling along the shores of the bay before we return to the ship for an exceptional dinner overlooking the sea.

Embark on a whale watching expedition in Tadoussac

Our destination today is Tadoussac, a peaceful village in Quebec with fewer than 900 inhabitants. Located at the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers, Tadoussac is well-known as one of the most exciting whale-watching sites in the world. Between the months of May and October, up to 13 different species of whale can be spotted making their way upriver from the Atlantic Ocean. Once a spot heavily trafficked by hunters, today this region is a protected environment for these extraordinary creatures. We’ll board a whale-watching cruise staffed by experts who will enlighten us on the behaviors and types of species found here, including impressive humpback and blue whales (the largest animals on the planet).

Cruising into the Great Lakes, and a sumptuous Farewell Dinner

We’ll cruise the into St. Lawrence Seaway today, the great river and canal project will ultimately takes us along the Thousand Islands corridor. Once a fashionable retreat for the vacationing elite (watch for elaborate mansions as you cruise), today this area is a hub for outdoor activities such as kayaking and hiking. Later, we'll reach Lake Ontario. The smallest in the chain of Great Lakes, Ontario creates a favorable microclimate that helps support a major fruit- and wine-growing region. This evening, we’ll gather for a sumptuous Farewell Dinner in the ship’s main dining room.

Find a slice of France in Québec City

Hailed as the "most French city outside of France," Québec is a spectacle of history, architecture, and activity. After a light breakfast, we’ll go ashore and immerse ourselves in the charm and character of Old Québec (Vieux-Québec), the last remaining fortified city north of Mexico and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour today gives you an inside look at the history behind these walls; we’ll travel to the Plains of Abraham, once the site of an epic battle, as well as the public square, known as Place Royale.

Unforgettable Moment: Next, we’ll head outside the city to witness a natural marvel: the majestic Montmorency Falls. Channel your inner adventurer as you travel by cable car to the top of the falls; you’ll be rewarded with incredible views across the falls to the Ile d’Orleans. The rest of the afternoon is yours to further explore: perhaps you’ll stroll along the port or ride the Old Québec Funicular to the impressive Château Frontenac.
