Very Different Cultural Immersion

Is this adventure right for you?

Each Vantage Adventure is designed to help you fully experience local culture and to get out and explore while keeping active. We find these are the two most fulfilling and rewarding ways to transform any trip into an adventure, and into the experience of a lifetime. To that end, we've rated each trip to indicate the level of cultural immersion and physical activity, with "1" being the lowest and "3" being the highest.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must be able to walk 2-3 miles unassisted on uneven volcanic terrain and at high altitudes.
  • You must be able to board Zodiac boats to board the M/V Santa Cruz II.
  • This is a very physically challenging trip - excellent balance and health are essential for your own personal safety and the rest of the group.
  • Travelers using any mobility aids are not suited for this adventure.

PACING:

  • 6 locations in 16 days
  • Three 1-night stays in Machu Picchu, Lima & Rincon del Puembo (suburbs of Quito)
  • Very early morning departures for Machu Picchu

TERRAIN:

  • High Elevations: 12,000 feet in Cuzco, 10,000 feet in the Sacred Valley and 8,000 feet in Machu Picchu
  • Uneven Terrain: During explorations of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, you will face several flights of stairs carved in the rock, as well as walks along narrow terraces with no handrails.
  • Volcanic Ground: Take note of uneven, loose volcanic ground during your exploration of the Galapagos Islands.

TRANSPORTATION:

  • Travel by private, air-conditioned motorcoach
  • Enjoy the comfort of the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu
  • 5 days and 4 nights navigating the Galapagos Islands onboard the deluxe expedition cruise ship M/V Santa Cruz II. Please note that there are no elevators onboard this 4-deck vessel, and ship-to-shore excursions are onboard Zodiac boats. Some wet landings require wading in water up to knee-high deep.
FLIGHTS: Your flight to South America will connect through Miami. Most flights from Miami to South America travel in the late evening. Depending upon your home city, you may have a shorter or longer layover in Miami before your flight departs (on Day 1 in some cases, early morning on Day 2 in other cases). At the end of your trip, your flight from Quito will have a late afternoon arrival in Miami, which may necessitate an overnight stay in Miami at an additional charge before catching your connecting flight home.
  • 4 internal flights: Cuzco to Lima, Lima to Quito, and round-trip flights from the mainland to the Galapagos Islands for your Expedition Cruise, with stops in Guayaquil.

TRANSPORTATION:

  • Travel by private, air-conditioned motorcoach

HOTELS & EXPEDITION CRUISE: Our hotels are high-standard international properties that feature unique local charms. They were specially selected with a focus on convenient locations in order to make the best of each destination. In Peru, we will use the deluxe Casa Andina Private Collection in the Sacred Valley, Cuzco and Lima (Miraflores) and more basic accommodations at Machu Picchu which feature amazing views of the sacred Urubamba River. In Ecuador, you will spend 3 nights at the deluxe Hilton Colon Quito and 1 night at the charming and conveniently located Hosteria Rincon del Puembo (which is located only 15 minutes from Quito International Airport).

You will explore the Galapagos Islands onboard the deluxe expedition cruise M/V Santa Cruz II for 5 days. With a maximum onboard capacity of 90 and the highest crew-to-passenger ratio in the region, this expedition vessel features a highly trained and friendly crew and offers passengers chances to snorkel, kayak, and observe marine life via a glass-bottomed boat.

Peruvian Amazon Pre‐Extension: If you are enhancing your South America travel with our optional pre‐extension, you will fly overnight from Miami to Lima, connecting to Iquitos, Peru, to begin your extension, then flying from Iquitos to Lima before meeting the base tour at the conclusion of the extension.

FOOD: Regional cuisine is a highlight of this adventure. You will have the opportunity to learn some of the best-kept secrets about Peruvian food and cooking during a home-hosted lunch in Cuzco and at high-quality restaurants in the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. On board the M/V Santa Cruz II, you will enjoy sophisticated Ecuadorian dishes prepared by chef Byron Rivera. Most, but not all, dietary requests can be accommodated if Vantage is notified in advance.

CULTURAL IMMERSION: This program provides many opportunities to interact with the local culture. We visit Inca ruins and small indigenous towns where we will enter local homes and markets and interact with artisans, musicians, and other local people. In fact, the whole time in Peru and on the mainland of Ecuador will be a fascinating Cultural Discovery for Vantage Adventure travelers.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Physical activity is very intensive in this South America travel program. Tours run on modern coaches, but in some areas air‐conditioned coaches are not available. The visit to the Inca ruins in Cuzco and Machu Picchu in Peru includes heavy walking, which may be affected by the cobblestone streets and high altitude in Cuzco (10,657 ft). There will also be steps and walking on uneven natural terrain in Machu Picchu and other ruins. The hike to Wayna Picchu in particular is challenging; you should be active and in excellent physical condition to embark on it. On the Galapagos cruise there is heavy walking on natural, uneven terrain, including beaches with sand and rocks and trails up small hills. There will be Zodiac rides of about 15 minutes each to reach the shore. Galapagos tours include both wet and dry landings. On wet landings customers may expect to wade in warm and calm waters below knee depth. The sun may be quite warm at times, and some walks in the Galapagos may exceed 2 miles. There are generally two walks offered each day. This is an expedition‐type cruise, and you should be active and in good physical condition before you reserve it.

SPECIAL FACTORS: Be prepared for high altitudes in Cuzco (11,200 feet) and Machu Picchu (approx. 8,000 feet). The Sacred Valley and Quito are not as high, but some travelers may be affected. Your will have many suggestions for handling the altitude. The Peruvian portion begins at the lowest altitude of the Sacred Valley area so that acclimatization is easier. The altitude is rarely a problem

Specifically designed for navigating the waters surrounding the Galapagos, the Deluxe expedition vessel M/V Santa Cruz II has all the amenities of a large cruise liner, yet it is small enough for a close‐up experience with nature. She is a 90‐passenger luxury expedition vehicle with a crew‐topassenger ratio of less‐than 1:2, allowing for personalized service and a more intimate experience. Although we will be in generally calm seas, depending on the weather conditions the sea movement might affect some guests. Depending upon when you travel, the Galapagos has a rainy season and a warm summer dry season.

Please note: Beginning on 9/1/2017, it will be mandatory for travelers to provide proof of health insurance in order to be admitted into Ecuador. Please make sure you have purchased travel insurance before departing for your trip and have written proof of coverage during your travels.
