DAY 1-2: Depart Home / Arrive Cape Town, South Africa

Upon arrival at our hotel in Cape Town this morning, we have the afternoon free to explore. Perhaps you’ll visit the Victoria & Albert Waterfront, overflowing with shops and restaurants. Dinner is at the hotel this evening.

DAY 3: Cape Town

After breakfast, if weather allows, you can stretch your legs on a 2-hour hike up the iconic Table Mountain. If you prefer, ride the cable car to the flat summit. You'll also go on a city tour of Cape Town that includes the Houses of Parliament, City Hall, and the Castle of Good Hope. After this we head to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront for lunch on your own. We board a ferry to Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At this grim island prison, Nelson Mandela was held for 17 years. At the pier, we meet our guide, a former inmate. He will provide a firsthand account of life behind bars and take us to see the cell where Mandela was held and the yard where got fresh air and never gave up hope.

Back at the waterfront we learn about diamonds and tanzanite during a tour of the Cape Town Diamond Museum at Shimansky.

 Included meals: breakfast

DAY 4 : Cape Town

We depart the city today for a scenic journey to Cape Point. Along the way, we stop at scenic Hout Bay for views of the distinctive Chapman’s Peak. At Cape Point, we board The Flying Dutchman Funicular to reach the hilltop lighthouse. From this overlook, we can see where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet. Later, lunch is on your own at Simons Town, then we visit the rock-strewn Boulders Beach, where a colony of African penguins makes its home. The evening is yours to enjoy at leisure back in Cape Town.

 Included meals: breakfast

DAY 5 : Cape Town

We visit South Africa’s lovely Winelands region today. In picturesque Stellenbosch, learn why the oldest European settlement in the province is called the “City of Oaks” during a tour. We’re sure to stop for a wine tasting as we explore. Later, enjoy an included lunch and two wine tastings in Franschhoek, South Africa’s wine capital whose vineyards were planted by the French on land they were given by the Dutch. For insight about its fascinating history, we visit the Huguenot Museum and have time to browse the wine shops. Cultural Discovery: During our Farewell Dinner back at the hotel, we hear a captivating talk by Christo Brand, one of Nelson Mandela’s former prison wardens.

 Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 6: Cape Town / Join base program

After breakfast, we transfer to Cape Town International Airport for our flight to Johannesburg, where we'll check into the hotel and meet up with Day 2 of the base program.

DAY 30 : Nairobi /Sweetwaters, Kenya

After breakfast drive to rural Nanyuki, Kenya, home of the Ol Pejata Sanctuary. En route, we cross the Equator, where we’ll stop to observe the coriolis effect on swirling water— which explains why storms spin one direction in the Northern Hemisphere and the opposite in the Southern. Continue on to Sweetwaters Tented Camp in the private Ol Pejata Conversancy, which has the highest wildlife concentration per acre in Kenya. Amidst a magnificent setting of open plains, an ideal locale for our small group, you'll be shown to your deluxe safari tent, then we enjoy lunch at the camp dining room. In the afternoon, set out on the first of three guided game drives in the preserve. We’ll also stop at the conservancy's sanctuary for orphaned chimps, the only such facility in Kenya, where you can observe and learn about these intelligent primates.

 Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 31 : Sweetwaters, Kenya

The beauty of Sweetwaters for wildlife viewing is that your private veranda looks right over one of the Ol Pejata Conservancy's central water holes, so you're practically guaranteed sightings at almost any time. In addition, you'll go on morning and afternoon game drives to seek out animals farther afield. Ol Pejata is a large private reserve, one of just four in Kenya. During our game drives, we’re likely to see some of the "Big Five" — lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. The conservancy is also the largest sanctuary for the endangered black rhino in East Africa, as well as for other rhinoceros species.

 Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 32 : Sweetwaters / Nairobi / Return home

Following breakfast, drive to Nairobi, arriving midday. You'll have an early dinner on your own before transferring to the airport for your flight home.
