DAY 1-2: Depart Home / Cape Town / Cape Winelands, South Africa

Board your overnight flight to Cape Town and transfer to your hotel in the Cape Winelands. Your evening is at leisure as you settle in to your picturesque surroundings. 

DAY 3: Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands

Today you’ll discover Stellenbosch, a charming hamlet brimming with Victorian, Georgian, and Cape Dutch architecture. Called the “Oak City” because of the preponderance of these stately trees found in the town, Stellenbosch is a tranquil town with a rich history, as you’ll discover on a full-day tour. You’ll also embark on a wine tasting – sampling some of the excellent varieties for which this region is renowned – later in the morning, followed by delicious lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll learn more about winemaking on a tour of a wine cellar here. Our Welcome Dinner is this evening.

DAY 4 : Franschhoek, Cape Winelands

Settled 300 years ago by the Huguenots, Franschhoek is an idyllic village that celebrates the French wine and food culture they brought with them. The town is teeming with stunning vistas, which you can admire as you discover it on a full-day tour that includes two wine tastings at a local estates as well as a visit to the Huguenot Monument.  This structure stands as a tribute to the eponymous group of French Protestants who called this region home and who influenced it so deeply. Dinner is at your hotel this evening.

DAY 5 : Cape Winelands / Cape Town / Join base program

After breakfast, we transfer to Cape Town, where we'll check into the hotel and meet up with Day 2 of the base program.

Explore its rich past as a center of learning at the celebrated Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Discover the mysterious underground world of its ancient Greco-Roman catacombs. Confront more recent history at the solemn El Alamein War Cemetery. You’ll also enjoy visits to the Alexandria National Museum, Roman Amphitheater, and Pompey’s Pillar.

DAY 23 : Cairo / Alexandria

After an early breakfast at the hotel, check out and transfer to Alexandria by motorcoach. Upon arrival, have lunch at one of the city’s local restaurants. Then, you’ll visit the world-renowned Bibliotheca Alexandrina — a discus-shaped, contemporary library, cultural center, and museum complex built to reincarnate what was once among the ancient world’s most important libraries. After checking into your hotel, enjoy a panoramic city tour showcasing its highlights. Your evening is at leisure and dinner is on your own.

DAY 24: Alexandria

This morning, visit the ancient Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, an extensive underground burial site from the Greco-Roman era that’s considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. According to legend, the great archaeological site was discovered in 1900 when a donkey working the farmland above fell into one of the shafts. You’ll also visit Alexandria’s tallest monument — Pompey’s Pillar. Constructed from a single block of red granite from Aswan, this massive Romanesque column is the largest of its kind ever found outside of ancient Roman and Constantinople. Following lunch at a local dining establishment, your tour of continues at the Roman Amphitheater and National Museum. Your evening is at leisure and dinner is on your own.

DAY 25: Alexandria / Cairo

This morning, transfer west of Alexandria to El Alamein, a town on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast and site of the El Alamein War Cemetery. Following the WWII Battle of El Alamein in 1942, more than 8,000 Allied soldiers — including more than 800 unidentified individuals and more than 100 of other nationalities — were laid to rest here. After your outing to this solemn locale, have lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Cairo. Spend your final evening in Egypt at leisure, and seek out dinner on your own.

DAY 26 : Cairo / Return to U.S.

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the Cairo airport for your flight home to the U.S.
