What to Expect
Each Vantage Adventure is designed to help you fully experience local culture and to get out and explore while keeping active. We find these are the two most fulfilling and rewarding ways to transform any trip into an adventure, and into the experience of a lifetime. To that end, we’ve rated each trip to indicate the level of cultural immersion and physical activity, with “1” being the lowest and “3” being the highest.
Your amazing African adventure gives you the opportunity to experience a range of cultures, cuisines, and languages as you travel the continent. You have many chances to interact with local residents and sample local foods during excursions, and Cultural Discovery events and activities.
We employ many kinds of transportation throughout our adventure, including planes, motorcoaches, ferries, river ships, feluccas, sailboats, cable cars, and funiculars. During many tours, there is easy to moderate walking. Because of the great variety in this adventure, the activity level shown should be considered an average, with many, if not most excursions well within the capabilities of a reasonably fit traveler. Our most strenuous walks will be around Victoria Falls and within the Selous Game Preserve, where we encounter uneven terrain, dirt roads, paths, paving stones, and high altitude. Our adventure takes us through many airports; in larger cities, such as Johannesburg and Cairo, they can be tiring due to security lines and check-ins.
4 countries in 23 days, with three 1-night stays, two 2-night stays, three 3-night stays, and two 4-night stays. There are 9 flights between destinations, ranging from just under one hour to 19.5 hours. The longest transfer days involve about 8 hours of travelling by coach, with breaks for sightseeing.
This tour covers a large area so travelers can expect to encounter a range of temperatures, especially on safari. South Africa is warmest in January and February, Zimbabwe in October and November, and Botswana in December and January. Different areas on the tour have rainy periods at varying times, and every season brings with it a bonus, be it the lush foliage or active game and African wildlife on safari.
HEALTH & SAFETY:
“Is it safe?” It’s a question often asked by first-time visitors about Africa. Our Best of Africa tour is very safe, and each destination and location is selected according to specific criteria to ensure excellent experiences in safe and secure areas. Private medical facilities in Africa's cities and major tourist destinations are of good quality. One thing you will need to take care of is any medication that's needed for your trip, such as malaria prophylactics. Consult your doctor during your planning. Security issues are no worse in Africa than in the rest of the world: It’s simply a case of using your common sense and not exposing yourself to risk. Your Adventure Leader will give you all the advice you need.
