Where do we begin? How about with this: We’ve enhanced this monumental, continent-spanning journey in virtually every way: 4 more nights; twice as many safari experiences (in two different game parks); an Egyptian cruise on Vantage’s brand-new deluxe ship, the ms/ Nebu; a whopping 12 additional included features (making it a remarkable 42 included features and Cultural Discoveries); more convenient accommodations; and TWO new bucket-list experiences you’ll be talking about for years: a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls and a Shark Cage Diving Safari! This was already an unbelievable adventure at an unbeatable value . . . now it’s simply off the charts!

This journey began with the dream of an empire: a route spanning the length of Africa from the Cape to Cairo. Titans of the age like Cecil John Rhodes never lived to see it, but you can experience it today. This grand African adventure takes you from the southern tip of Africa to its northern limit, bringing you to four different countries in three of its most distinctive regions: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Egypt.

You'll start at the Cape of Good Hope, and echo Rhodes as you survey the continent from its southwesternmost corner where two oceans meet. You’ll continue north into Zimbabwe and follow in David Livingstone’s footsteps, standing on the very edge of the mighty Victoria Falls, which he first saw in 1855.  This is also where you’ll enjoy your first safari experience — at the virtually brand-new Dinokeng Game Reserve, which is teeming with wildlife — including the Big Five.

Next, you’ll travel to east Africa, the home of safari. Climb aboard a charter flight to reach the remote and untamed wilderness of the Selous Game Reserve, one of the world’s largest, most unspoiled reserves and again search for the Big Five on game drives, boat cruises and walking safaris. And, on the tropical island of Zanzibar, you’ll explore historic Stone Town, breathing in its spice-laden air.

Egypt, the ancient center of the Pharaonic empire awaits you next. In Luxor’s Valley of the Kings, you’ll enter the sacred tombs of Ramses II and Tutankhamun, and pay respects to the female pharaoh Hatshepsut. Then, travel to the Dendera Temple complex, bargain for treasures in Cairo’s largest souk, and confront the immense scale of time before the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx.

On this adventure from its toe to its top, all of Africa’s thrilling natural beauty is on display, and itsrich cultural heritage is a delightful accompaniment. Enjoy 42 included features and Cultural Discoveries and an incredible six UNESCO World Heritage sites! Take the journey that Africa’s greatest explorers could once only dream of, and see Africa from Cape to Cairo!

DAY 1:

Fly overnight to Cape Town, South Africa

Your adventure begins with an overnight flight to South Africa, arriving in Cape Town on Day 2.

Please note: Arrive to your destination or home rested and refreshed! Convenient gateway city stopover options mean you can break up longer flights easily — just ask our Flight Experts for assistance.

DAY 2:

Arrive in Cape Town

As your flight lands in the "fairest Cape of them all," you’ll be able to see the unmistakable outline of Table Mountain from the window of the plane.

A Vantage representative will greet you upon arrival and assist with the private transfer to your hotel. You’ll have the afternoon and evening at leisure to relax, dine on your own, and get acquainted with your surroundings in this beautiful city.

DAY 3:

Stand on top of Table Mountain and explore a city full of culture

Today we’ll visit the wonder that is Table Mountain. A spectacular cable car ride will whisk us to the top within minutes. Here, we’ll be able to see for miles as we enjoy a light stroll around the walkways and viewpoints, reveling in the views of the Cape Peninsula and the strange and special plants of the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Center.

Next up is a city tour, where we’ll see the Houses of Parliament, City Hall, and the star-shaped 17th-century Castle of Good Hope. Following lunch on your own, enjoy the afternoon to explore Cape Town at your own pace. This evening, we’ll enjoy a Welcome Briefing and Dinner at our hotel.

Included Meals:

Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 4:

Tour the spectacular Cape Peninsula to see Cape Point and Simon's Town

This morning we’ll drive along some incredibly scenic roads on a journey around the Cape Peninsula. Along the way, we’ll see the Twelve Apostles Mountain Range, the exclusive seaside suburbs of Clifton and Camps Bay, and stop at viewpoints along the sensational Chapman’s Peak Drive to take postcard-perfect pictures of Hout Bay. At Cape Point, we’ll ride the Flying Dutchman Funicular to the hilltop lighthouse, and gaze down at where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet below.

Enjoy lunch at your leisure before we continue on to the charming naval village of Simon’s Town. Here we’ll pay an unforgettable visit to the comical colony of African penguins who live in the beautiful little bay of Boulders Beach. The evening is yours to spend as you please back in Cape Town.

Included Meals:

Breakfast

DAY 5:

The incomparable thrill of Shark Cage Diving and meet Mandela’s favorite prison guard

Today, you’ll embark on a full-day tour you’ll be talking about for years to come. There are few things you can do in life that will be more exhilarating than our expedition today: Shark Cage Diving. You’ll venture to Gansbaai and set off on a ship customized for this purpose, as you sail into the waters justly named “Shark Alley.”  There is a massive colony of seals on a nearby island, which make this an ideal location for spotting the fearsome, fin-backed creatures. What’s more, your excursion will be supporting a group that is committed to protecting these majestic creatures. We have partnered with a leading organization that focuses on the conservation of great white sharks through responsible tourism and research.

Along with some fellow travelers, you can (if you choose) enter in a completely secure steel cage, which will float on the surface so you’ll not be far from the surface or the ship at any time. Then, scan underwater for one of nature’s most impressive predators: the great white shark. There’s no guarantee we’ll see the creatures, of course, because nature follows its own path — but this over-the-top thrill is an experience you’ll tell stories about for years to come!

Cultural Discovery: Tonight, we’ll gather at our hotel for dinner. Our guest speaker tonight will be the prison guard who was in charge of Nelson Mandela and eventually became his friend. Hearing how his experiences with the dignified Mandela brought this guard to change his views about racial oppression and his country is sure to inspire and move you deeply.

Included Meals:

Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 6:

Fly to Zimbabwe, and take a tour of the Victoria Falls

This morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. On arrival, check into the elegant Victoria Falls Hotel, where the lush lawns offer a spectacular view of the mists from the Victoria Falls. But, we’ll be getting much closer to them soon!

After lunch at your leisure, we’ll go on a guided tour of the UNESCO-listed Victoria Falls National Park. We’ll be able to stand right on the edge of the fern-covered cliffs and gaze into the boiling depths of the Devil’s Cataract. The roar of the falls is overwhelming, and the spray so heavy that we recommend wearing a raincoat. Our unforgettable day continues as we sip cocktails while soaking up the unforgettable sight and awe-inspiring might of the falls. We’ll return to the tranquility of our hotel this evening for a splendid dinner.

Included Meals:

Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 7:

Meet children at a Vantage Cares school, visit a craft market, and enjoy an optional elephant interaction and river cruise

This morning you can enjoy a long, leisurely breakfast and a stroll through the gorgeous hotel grounds, or you may opt to go on an exciting early morning Elephant Encounter. This powerful experience allows you to interact directly with these majestic creatures, and even feed them. Being so close to them, and learning about the work being done to save them, is both enlightening and rewarding. You will also visit a local village.

Later this morning, we’ll visit a local market. Cultural Discoveries: This is a fun opportunity to interact with local artists and, of course, the perfect chance to bargain for souvenirs, such as the distinctive stone carvings Zimbabwe is famous for. We’ll also visit Chinotimba Primary School, where we’ll be greeted with smiles and songs from the children, and get a chance to interact with them and learn about their lives. Vantage Cares, our philanthropic arm, supports the school, so you can see firsthand the good you’re helping to do by traveling with us. Many travelers say this is one of the unexpected highlights of the trip.

This afternoon, you may choose to take a cruise on the Zambezi River. Glide along this timeless waterway, and be treated to a talk about the “Trails of David Livingstone.” You’ll be floating along the very same stretch of river the legendary explorer once navigated, and a third-generation Zimbabwean storyteller will reveal Livingstone lore that few history books include.

Included Meals:

Breakfast

DAY 8:

Soar above Victoria Falls in a helicopter

This morning set off to enjoy yet another once-in-a-lifetime experience: flying in a helicopter over Victoria Falls on the Flight of the Angels. When David Livingstone wrote about his first sight of the Victoria Falls, he said that “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. The Flight of Angels actually gives you the chance to see the falls as an angel — or an eagle — would. It lifts off less than two miles from Victoria Falls town center and takes you over the Zambezi River to fly a complete circuit above the Falls in both directions. The 12- to 15-minute flight gives you the best possible views of the falls and will certainly leave you agreeing with Dr. Livingstone.

Lunch will feature views from a different perspective: on a veranda overlooking the Victoria Falls Gorge. You’ll enjoy a delightful meal at the Lookout Café and enjoy yet another spectacular vista of this Wonder of the World. Your afternoon is at leisure.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 9:

Get your first taste of safari in Dinokeng Game Reserve

After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our flight to Johannesburg. Upon arrival, we’ll transfer to Dinokeng Game Reserve. Southern Africa offers a superlative safari experience, and you’ll experience it all up close and personal at this remarkable reserve. The wildlife you’ll see in this nearly 47,000-acre reserve is wonderfully diverse; you can seek out everything from zebras and giraffes to the famed Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, Cape buffalo, elephant), and hundreds of bird species. Another day of safari bliss

We’ll have yet another day to enjoy the splendor of Dinokeng, as we set off on morning and evening game drives today. There’s something about safari life that enhances your days: each new vista offers new opportunities for discovery. We’ll revel in the thrills of two more game drives. Each of your meals will be at the lodge today.

The thrill of seeking out wildlife on this 45,000-acre reserve is enhanced by the variety we’ll see. Amidst a wonderfully diverse landscape (ranging from thornveld and bushveld to grassy floodplains), you’ll have the chance to view the legendary Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and Cape buffalo), as well as ostrich, jackal, hippo, crocodile, and many more. In addition, the wetlands around Mongena Lake are especially hospitable to browsing and grazing species like the kudu, impala, and waterbuck.

The big star of the show here will no doubt be the black rhino. This is a member of the Big Five that sometimes eludes safari-goers (since it is so rare), but Vantage travelers have an excellent chance of spotting this highly sought-after creatures in Dinokeng. This is a huge advantage if you’re looking to see all of the Big Five!

It’s not just the mammals, either . . . there are 300 species of bird here, including fish eagles, the endangered blue crane, and a breeding pair of martial eagles. Another day of discovery ends with a delightful dinner back at the lodge.

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

Fly to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the gateway to your next safari adventure

Included Meals:

Breakfast

DAY 13:

Charter flight to the Selous Game Reserve

Today, we’ll see a completely different side of Africa — yet still revel in the thrill of safari — as we journey in east Africa. After breakfast, we’ll board a short charter flight to the Selous Game Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Tanzania.

One of the world’s largest, most unspoiled game reserves, the Selous carefully preserves a large and diverse population of wildlife, including African elephant, lion, wild dog, black rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, and more than 300 bird species.

As guests at an exclusive 12-tent camp in the reserve, we’ll enjoy all meals at the lodge, where traditional African cuisine will enhance the safari experience. Whichever option you choose, get an early start to see the animals at their most active. Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest before heading back out in the afternoon. Later, we’ll share tales of our wildlife sightings over dinner at the lodge.

We’ll enjoy a second full safari day with two more private game-viewing excursions. No matter how you choose to explore the vast Selous Game Reserve, be sure to have your camera and GoPro ready to capture whatever incredible wildlife may cross your path.

The Selous is one of Africa’s largest protected parks, stretching more than 300,000 square miles and encompassing a wide range of habitats and vegetation, from open grasslands and thick forests to lowland swamps and rainforests. Tonight, we’ll savor a last dinner at our luxurious wilderness retreat.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

Fly to Zanzibar and relax into your opulent oceanfront hotel

This morning after breakfast, we transfer to the local airport for our flight to Unguja — also known as Zanzibar. Located just off the coast of east Africa, the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar — of which Unguja is the main island — was a strategic center of the 19th-century spice and slave trades.

This coral-ringed, palm-fringed island is an alluring combination of tropical paradise and cultural melting pot. Upon arrival, we’ll settle in at our oceanfront hotel and take the balance of the day to explore the charming surroundings on our own. Later, we’ll meet up again for dinner at the hotel.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 17:

Discover east Africa’s rich history on a tour of Stone Town

Cultural Discovery: This morning, we’ll go on a guided tour of Zanzibar’s historic town center. Also known as Mij Mkongwe — Swahili for "Old Town" — Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring ancient dhow harbors, a Portuguese fort, bright bazaars, an old slave market, and a 19th-century ceremonial sultan’s palace.

Exploring Stone Town’s labyrinthine streets crowded with minarets and elaborately carved wooden doors, will give you a sense of this legendary east African trading town’s unique mix of Swahili, Indian, Arab, and European influences. Following an included lunch, you’ll have the afternoon to wander this fascinating, multicultural maze on your own. And there are so many ways to absorb the local culture! Included Meals:

Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 19:

Fly to kaleidoscopic Cairo and shop its bustling souk

After breakfast, we’ll transfer to the airport for our flight to Egypt’s sprawling capital city of Cairo. We’ll check into our hotel and enjoy a late lunch here. Cultural Discovery: This afternoon, we’ll visit the city’s famous Khan el-Khalili market in Cairo’s Islamic district. This large souk attracts locals and travelers alike with a diverse selection of souvenirs, handmade goods, antiques and jewelry, as well as coffee shops, street food vendors, and shisha bars.

Even if you have no desire to shop, this bustling souk will offer us a colorful glimpse into the busy life of Cairo. Before we head back to our hotel, we’ll gather for a traditional Egyptian-style dinner at one of the market’s more upscale cafés.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 20:

Viewing Cairo’s iconic Pyramids and the Great Sphinx

Today begins with an exciting excursion to Giza in the southwest outskirts of Cairo — site of Egypt’s most iconic and monumental treasures: the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Constructed as tombs for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, each of the three pyramidal, stone structures were built by hand using finely tuned ancient building techniques that remain a mystery today. The Great Pyramid of Giza — or Pyramid of Khufu — is the oldest and largest of the three, dating back to Egypt’s fourth dynasty (2580–2560 BC) and standing some 455 feet at its tallest point. Located nearby on this otherworldly archaeological site, you’ll also see the legendary Sphinx, a huge limestone statue of a mythical reclining lion with a human face thought to modeled after Khafre. After a truly memorable morning, gather for lunch at a traditional local restaurant. You’ll then visit Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum, a brand-new, much-anticipated museum that houses the antiquities of Giza and beyond. Costing over $1 billion to build, it is the largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. Tonight, celebrate your incredible Egyptian discoveries over dinner at the hotel.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 21:

Delve into Cairo’s captivating Islamic history

Today, you’ll discover some of Cairo’s most notable religious sites. We’ll begin with a visit to the city’s Coptic Christian neighborhood of Old Cairo, where you will visit the Hanging Church, the Fortress of Babylon, and other landmarks of its Christian past. You’ll also visit several synagogues. Then, transfer to Cairo’s scenic Al-Azhar Park — a vast public green space in Old Cairo — where we’ll take in panoramic views of the city from a popular restaurant. Afterwards, delve further into the city’s captivating Islamic history with visits to the fortified Saladin Citadel and the Al-Azhar Mosque — one of Cairo’s earliest and most significant.

Included Meals:

Breakfast  & Lunch

DAY 22:

Fly to Luxor, board your ship, & discover the Valley of the Kings

The next phase of your epic Africa adventure starts today as you board a flight to Luxor. Upon arrival, you’ll board your home for the next four nights — Vantage’s brand-new deluxe ship m/s Nebu — and continue your Egyptian discoveries by sailing Luxor’s West Bank and exploring the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut. Part of the greater Theban Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valley of the Kings encompasses more than 60 pharaohs’ tombs and burial chambers cut deep into rock cliffs over a 500-year span. Exploring some of these sacred chambers — including the tombs of the powerful King Ramses II and the famous boy-king Tutankhamun — admire the elaborate hieroglyphs and spectacular decorative paintings that adorn their walls with illustrative stories of lives and dynasties past. You’ll also visit the multi-terraced, royal Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, named for the Egypt’s longest-reigning female pharaoh following the premature death of her husband, King Thutmose II. As if that were not enough, your day also includes the spectacular Karnak Sound and Light show as we walk among the ruins.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 23:

The temples of Khnum and Horus

Egypt continues to dazzle us today, as we travel to Esna, home to the ancient temple of Khnum. Dating back to at least 2800 BC, Khnum was regularly called “Father of Fathers and Mother of Mothers” of the pharaohs and was among the most well-known of Egyptian gods. He is often depicted with the head of a ram and the hands of a man. In the afternoon, we venture onward to Edfu, where we’ll see the Temple of Horus (the falcon-headed god), which is the second-largest in Egypt and among the best preserved. All of your meals will be on board today.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 24:

Visit Kom Ombo Temple and sail to Aswan

Begin the day in relaxing fashion, with a buffet breakfast and morning of scenic sailing toward Kom Ombo — an agricultural town on the Nile’s East Bank, where you’ll visit its namesake temple. This unusual “double” temple features symmetrical halves dedicated to Horus the falcon god and Sobek the crocodile god, each decorated with intricate, well-preserved reliefs. Then, board your ship and sail onward to Aswan.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 25:

See the Aswan High Dam, Temple of Philae, and ancient quarry

Today, you’ll visit the Aswan High Dam — a dam built across the Nile in 1970 with Soviet funding that created the Lake Nasser reservoir. While there, your Adventure Leader will describe some of the significant effects of the project on adjacent communities. You’ll also visit the renowned Temple of Philae, a treasured monument dedicated to the goddess Isis that was painstakingly moved to its current location when the High Dam was completed. Conclude your afternoon at an Aswan quarry to see one of the most famous of ancient stones — the “Unfinished Obelisk.” Lying where it was abandoned after cracks appeared, the ancient, granite obelisk would have stood 120 feet high had it been raised. All meals will be enjoyed on board today.

Included Meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

DAY 26:

Disembark your deluxe ship and fly back to Cairo

Your Egypt cruise comes to an end today, as you disembark and transfer to the airport for your flight back to Cairo. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for a day at leisure. Perhaps you wish to simply relax at the hotel, or maybe you’d like to explore more of the Egyptian capital — if that’s the case, your Adventure Leader will be happy to offer some suggestions and guidance. Be sure to be back in time for your Farewell Dinner, however, as it will be the perfect (delicious) conclusion to this epic adventure.

Included Meals:

Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 27:
