DAY 17: Cape Town
After breakfast, if weather allows, you can stretch your legs on a 2-hour hike up the iconic Table Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you prefer, ride the cable car to the flat summit. You'll also go on a city tour of Cape Town that includes the Houses of Parliament, City Hall, and the Castle of Good Hope. After this we head to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront for lunch on your own. We board a ferry to Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At this grim island prison, Nelson Mandela was held for 17 years. At the pier, we meet our guide, a former inmate. He will provide a firsthand account of life behind bars and take us to see the cell where Mandela was held and the yard where got fresh air and never gave up hope.
Back at the waterfront we learn about diamonds and tanzanite during a tour of the Cape Town Diamond Museum at Shimansky.
