DAY 1:

Depart U.S.A.

Your adventure begins with an overnight flight to South Africa, arriving in Johannesburg on Day 2. Upon arrival, we have the remainder of the day to rest up after our journey.

DAY 2:

Johannesburg, South Africa

Arrive in one of Africa's most historic and multicultural cities and transfer to your hotel. You will have the remainder of the day to rest up after your journey. Dinner is on your own.

DAY 3:

Johannesburg

After breakfast, we set off on a tour showcasing the changes taking place in the developing area of Soweto. Once known only for its shantytowns, Soweto is also home to many successful businesspeople and boasts upscale neighborhoods. We witness both sides of this historic township as your guide provides unique insights. Cultural Discovery: As we explore, we stop at the home where Nelson Mandela lived before he was arrested, and tour the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum, which chronicles the student uprisings of 1976. After lunch at a local restaurant, we have the afternoon free back at the hotel. This evening, enjoy an orientation meeting and a Welcome Dinner.

DAY 4:

Johannesburg / Flight to Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape

After a short flight to Port Elizabeth, we transfer to the lodge and soak up our new surroundings. Off-the-beaten-path has never been so close. With a temperate climate, remarkably diverse landscapes and wildlife, and fewer crowds than some of the more famous game parks in this country, the Eastern Cape is a burgeoning province for safari-goers in the know. You’ll enjoy a game drive this afternoon, getting acquainted with life in the bush and your first glimpse of the wildlife here.

DAY 5:

Eastern Cape

Settle in to the rhythms of safari life. Rise early, and enjoy fresh-brewed coffee and a buffet breakfast before setting off on a game drive. With the morning dew still on the grass, rumble in your six-passenger, 4x4 vehicle through the landscapes, keeping an eye open for the Big Five — especially elephants, of which there are ample herds here — as well as a plethora of other wildlife, including the rare cheetah. After lunch, you’ll embark yet again to experience the goosebump thrills of safari.

DAY 6:

Eastern Cape

Another day to revel in the natural wonders of the Eastern Cape on morning and afternoon safari activities awaits. You’ll take to the bush on morning and late afternoon game drives that allow you the flexibility to seek out all kinds of wildlife here, including zebra, baboon, and 300 bird species. Your expert guide will enlighten you on the natural and human history here, as well as pointing out fascinating facts about the creatures you’ll see.

DAY 7:

Eastern Cape / Cape Winelands

We awake in the wilds of the Eastern Cape, then transfer to the airport for a flight to Cape Town en route to our next destination: the world-famous Cape Winelands. The name evokes the vintages for which this region is renowned, yet an equally pleasurable treat is the serene landscapes: rows of verdant vines fringed by mountains and blessed with a temperate climate. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure to relax and savor an included dinner at the hotel tonight.

DAY 8:

Cape Winelands

Prepare yourself for some of the most beautiful countryside anywhere in the world, as we visit South Africa’s lovely Winelands region today. In picturesque Stellenbosch, learn why the oldest European settlement in the province is called the “City of Oaks” during a tour. Discover the region’s delectable vintages during two tastings, and gain insights on the inner workings of wine-making and culture during an afternoon cellar tour. All the while, soak in the breathtaking natural splendor of this postcard-perfect region.

DAY 9:

Cape Winelands / Cape Town

Today, you’ll depart the idyllic Winelands and make your way to glittering Cape Town. Embark on a tour of this picturesque and historic city, including the Houses of Parliament, City Hall, and the star-shaped, 17th-century Castle of Good Hope — the last surviving colonial building in South Africa. Following lunch on your own, enjoy the afternoon to explore Cape Town independently. Dinner is at the hotel this evening.

DAY 10:

Cape Town

After breakfast, if weather allows, we’ll make our way up to the top of iconic Table Mountain. If you prefer, ride the cable car to the flat summit. You’ll enjoy a lunch on your own and an afternoon at leisure to get to know South Africa’s “Mother City.”

DAY 11:

Cape Town

We depart the city today for a scenic journey to Cape Point. Along the way, we’ll see what makes this area — known as the Cape Floral Region — worthy of its UNESCO World Heritage Status. You’ll admire stunning Hout Bay and appreciate views of distinctive Chapman’s Peak. At Cape Point, we board the Flying Dutchman Funicular to reach the hilltop lighthouse. From this overlook, we can look out over the broad expanse of water where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. Later, lunch is on your own at Simons Town, before visiting rock-strewn Boulders Beach, where a colony of African penguins makes its home.

DAY 12:

Cape Town

Discover the jaw-dropping scenery and remarkably diverse flora of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on an exclusive photography tour. This special excursion offers you the opportunity to capture eye-popping pictures in this award-winning botanical garden. Set in the shadow of iconic Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch offers floral fireworks that rank among the best in the world, and you’ll get to capture all the beauty yourself with some helpful guidance from your guide.  From these brilliant gardens, we make our way to the colorful neighborhood of Bo Kaap, the Malay district. With our cameras in hand, we’ll tour the streets that are brimming with charming homes painted in brilliant colors – an eclectic reflection of the Rainbow Nation.  More of our senses are engaged as we enjoy a Cape Malay cooking class, where you’ll learn how to make a delectable local specialty. 

Your afternoon is at leisure. Cultural Discovery: Later this evening, savor an included dinner and gain an insider’s perspective when you participate in a fascinating lecture from Nelson Mandela’s former prison warden.

DAY 13:

Cape Town / Pilanesberg National Park

Today, venture to the northern part of the country and Pilanesberg National Park. This is the land where the Lowveld and the Kalahari landscapes blend into one another, which makes for singular vistas and diverse wildlife. Animals that seek out the arid landscapes such as the springbok and brown hyena intermingle with those who travel in more damp environs, such as the impala. You’ll experience the park on an afternoon game drive today.

DAY 14:

Pilanesberg National Park

What species haven't you seen yet? Your eagle-eyed guide can certainly help you seek them out in Pilanesberg. You’ll embark on morning and afternoon game drives with plenty of time to spot what you’re looking for, including the famed Big Five: lion, leopard, rhino (both white and black varieties can be seen), elephant, and buffalo. Though we will have sought out these creatures many times now, the thrill remains fresh.  While you are on the lookout for animals, your guide may also fill you in on the history of this reserve, which was opened in 1979 after Operation Genesis, the largest translocation of wildlife ever at the time. The result was a true success story for conservation — in fact, there are now more rhinos per square kilometer here than in anywhere else in Africa.

DAY 15:

Pilanesburg National Park

You’ll enjoy another day of safari activities here in Pilanesberg, which is located in the crater of an extinct volcano. Embark on a walking safari in the morning, breathing in the fresh air and learning about the local habitat from your knowledgeable guide. In the afternoon, seeking out creatures ranging from elephants and rhinos to lions and leopards. The birding is excellent here as well, with more than 300 species ranging from the bateleur eagle to the secretary bird. Allow the wonders of this region to wash over you one last time as you close out your South Africa safari experience.

DAY 16:

Pilanesberg / Sun City / Johannesburg / Flight Home

Today, transfer to the Sun City airport and fly to Johannesburg to connect with your flight back home.
