What to Expect
Your Canadian Rockies adventure includes 2 Canadian provinces and 1 American state in 15 days, with a 2-night stay in Jasper and Banff national parks, Emerald Lake and Victoria ,and 1-night stays in Calgary, Quesnal, Vancouver, Kelowna, and Seattle, plus a full day aboard VIA Rail's The Canadian
. Please note that the railways are shared with many other train companies, so uncontrollable delays are to be expected.
Most sightseeing during your trans-Canada rail trip will be on air-conditioned coaches with guides. Most walking is easy, but some areas have rocky terrain or require uphill walking, with easy paths or steps available. The snow coach ride at Athabasca Glacier is easy for all ages. A naturalist guide will lead you on easy nature hike during your time at Emerald Lake.
Focus is on Canada's vast scenery, from cities to mountaintops. Banff and Jasper national parks are part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Includes nature and wildlife tours and lectures, plus a snow coach ride on a glacier.
WHAT TO PACK:
We suggest warm, casual clothing with good walking shoes for this Canadian Rockies vacation. Weather is never predictable, so be sure to to be prepared for just about anything. You'll want to take along a sweater or jacket for cool evenings, even in the summer months. It's a good idea to dress in layers, which will allow you to adjust to changes in temperature with the changes in elevation.
During your scenic train travel aboard the VIA Rail's The Canadian
, there are no scheduled disembarkations. Some travelers may find it confining to be aboard the VIA Rail train for a full day, and should plan for the trip by bringing reading materials or other activities. Please note that with train travel, unexpected delays can occur due to the weather and train traffic.
LUGGAGE RESTRICTIONS: To help make your travel experience as smooth and simple as possible, Vantage recommends you limit your luggage to one large suitcase and one small carry-on bag per person. Although airlines will generally allow more luggage, the transportation on your Vantage tour may have stricter space limitations. Domestic and international carriers, including our seaplane voyage from Vancouver to Victoria, currently restrict weight limitations to 35 pounds per bag, so pack essential accordingly; remaining luggage will be transported via ferry and will arrive at the hotel later in the day. Please note the one carry-on bag limitation imposed by VIA Rail, and pack for the day on board accordingly — including any necessary medication.
Please note: Your trans-Canada rail trip will visit some high elevation areas. While driving to Jasper, the elevation rises to approximately 8,000 feet. High elevations may cause some people to experience mild fatigue. Anyone with concerns about traveling at high elevations should contact their personal physician.
