DAYS 1-2:

Depart home / Santiago, Chile

Your South American Presidential adventure begins with an overnight flight to Chile. (Or depart four days earlier for your optional Chilean Wine Country pre-trip extension.) Upon arrival in Santiago, you’ll be met by your Adventure Leader. Enjoy a city tour of Chile’s capital city that contrasts past and present, including the visit to the Alameda, Santiago’s bustling main avenue; the colonial-era Cathedral; and the Plaza de Armas. Cultural Discovery: During your stroll around the city’s main square, the Plaza de Armas, you’ll visit the superb Museum of Pre-Columbian Arts, which contains one of world’s finest collections of art and artifacts from South and Central America. This evening, our group will get better acquainted over a Welcome Cocktail and Dinner at the hotel.

Included Meals:

Dinner

DAY 3:

Santiago (Valparaiso)

Prior to the opening of the Panama Canal, Valparaiso, “the San Francisco of South America,” was a vital stopover for ships sailing around Cape Horn. Set in a natural amphitheater overlooking the sea, the city boasts a historic quarter that has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its 19th-century architecture and urban planning. Much like San Francisco’s trolleys, the city is famed for funicular cars that shuttle up and down the steep hills. We’ll see the city’s highlights on our tour and enjoy lunch in a traditional restaurant overlooking the harbor. Our route back to Santiago takes us along the coast of beautiful Viña del Mar, an elegant beach resort town.

Included Meals:

Breakfast  & Lunch

DAY 4:

Santiago / Puerto Varas

A short morning flight south brings us to Puerto Montt, the capital of the Chilean Lakes district. Cultural Discovery: We’ll stop to explore the historic Angelmo fish market. We then continue to our Deluxe lakeside hotel in Puerto Varas by motorcoach, arriving mid-afternoon. The snowy peaks of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes form a stunning backdrop to the southern shore of Lake Llanquihue — all visible from your hotel room. After settling in, we’ll get acclimated during an easy walking tour, which reveals the town’s distinctive German heritage. Puerto Varas was settled by German colonists in 1853, and its half-timbered houses would be right at home in the fairytale Black Forest region. The rest of the day is at leisure. Perhaps you’ll stroll to hilltop Phillipi Park or just relax and enjoy the facilities at your hotel.

Included Meals:

Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 5:

Puerto Varas

Today’s full-day adventure begins with a scenic ride past dairy farms scrolling out from the southern shore of Lake Llanquihue. Our destination is Vicente Peres Rosales, Chile’s oldest national park and the home to the lush Valdivian temperate rainforest and three volcanoes. Here, we view the roaring waters of Petrohue Rapids, one of the most famous landmarks of the Chilean Lakes District, and enjoy a nature walk through woodlands dense with bright orange myrtle, Chilean firebush, and hazel. Hummingbirds proliferate here. Keep your eyes open for the variety of other birds and wildlife that inhabit the area. Presidential Feature: Lunch at a deluxe lodge overlooking spectacular Lake Llanquihue and the snow-capped cone of Osorno Volcano.

Included Meals:

Breakfast  & Lunch

DAY 6:

Puerto Varas

Presidential Choice: Today you’ll be able to choose from two unique activities. (The hard part may be making up your mind about which to choose!)

Fly fishing on the Maullin River: Experience one of the world’s most famous fly fishing destinations as you join expert local guides for a fully equipped morning of fishing. Geared for both accomplished fly fishers as well as active travelers interested at trying their hand at this fast-growing sport, it includes everything you need, including fly rods, with two people per boat.

Frutillar German Colony: Alternatively, join our fascinating excursion to Frutillar, a unique German colony founded in 1852, when Chile was inviting European settlers to populate the vast open spaces of Patagonia. The gorgeous region with its sparkling blue lake and snow-capped mountains reminded settlers of Bavaria. During your visit, you’ll see houses and other buildings constructed in typical German style, and visit a museum that tells the fascinating story of the German colonization. Your visit also includes a delicious lunch at a lakeside restaurant.

With either excursion, you’ll be back at your hotel by mid afternoon, with the remainder of the day and evening at leisure.

Included Meals:

Breakfast  & Lunch

DAY 7:

Puerto Varas / Bariloche, Argentina

Cross the Andes from Chile to Argentina today — by boat! On a series of linked lake crossings, travel through the beautiful Patagonian Lakes District, passing from Chile into Argentina. Enjoy the magnificent scenery throughout your trip, including views of snow-capped volcanoes (weather permitting). Lunch is included enroute in a local restaurant in the eco-village of Peulla, a paradise for nature lovers. Your destination is Bariloche, in the heart of “the Switzerland of South America.” Here, enjoy a lake-view room in the historic Llao Llao Hotel, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Located in Nahuel Huapi National Park, the famed resort has hosted notable guests from all over the world, including former President Obama and his family.

Included Meals:

Breakfast  & Lunch

DAY 8:

Bariloche

Presidential Choice: You’ll have the second of your activity choices today. Take your pick from:

18 holes of golf at the Llao Llao Hotel's spectacular course, which enjoys one of the world’s most beautiful settings. Includes greens fees, clubs, and a hand cart. All you have to do is remember to pack proper golf attire. (Please note: The course is quite hilly and ride-on golf carts are not available, so golfers must be prepared to walk the entire course, with a hand cart for their clubs.)

Float trip on the Limay River: You’ll be immersed in the grandeur of Patagonia, as you push off for a gentle float trip on the clear waters of the beautiful Limay, with views of unique geological formations and the towering Andes as a backdrop.

This evening, relax and share stories of your activities thus far as we enjoy a three-course dinner at the hotel.

Included Meals:

Breakfast & Dinner

DAY 9:

Bariloche / Buenos Aires

Before saying goodbye to Patagonia, you will ride the chairlift to the top of Campanario Hill for the spectacular views. Afterwards, view Bariloche’s distinctive alpine architecture, including the Bariloche Civic Center, a national monument, before flying to Buenos Aires. After arrival, you’ll check into the famed Alvear Palace Hotel, the “Ritz” of South America, another member of The Leading Hotels of the World and one that consistently occupies the very top tier of global hotel rankings. Enjoy an included dinner at the hotel. This is an opportunity to step into the luxury of an earlier era, when Argentina was one of the five wealthiest countries in the world. You'll have the evening free.

Included Meals:

Breakfast

DAY 10:

Buenos Aires

Today you’ll get to know this sophisticated city on a half-day city tour that includes the colorful La Boca neighborhood; the main square, Plaza de Mayo; and the elegant Recoleta district. You’ll have the afternoon free and to get ready for our Presidential Feature, the Gala Tango Night & Dinner at the famed El Viejo Almacen nightclub, the premier tango hall in Buenos Aires. The evening begins with our private tango lesson, followed by dinner and a fiery tango show. Performances include many styles of tango, from the most traditional to the modern acrobatic tango, as well as orchestra solos and tango singers. It’s sure to be a night to remember and a highpoint of our Presidential adventure!

DAY 11:

Buenos Aires (Estancia visit)

We head for the wide-open spaces known as the pampas today, where we’ll visit an authentic estancia (ranch), founded in the 1800s. Cultural Discoveries: During your visit, you’ll learn about the life of the daring Argentinean cowboys, known as gauchos, as you watch a thrilling show of horsemanship and skills, including riding and roping. You’ll also learn how to brew mate tea the traditional way, in a gourd. You'll also enjoy a mouth-watering a gaucho-style asado (barbecue) served with a glass of fine Argentine wine.

Included Meals:

Breakfast  & Lunch

DAY 12:

Buenos Aires

The cultural side of this sophisticated city comes into focus today as we take a tour of the famed Teatro Colon, the Beaux Arts opera house that is ranked among the top concert venues in the world. You’ll then visit Puerto Madero, the historic port district on the Rio de Plata waterfront that has become the site of some of the city’s most striking new architecture. Among them is the spectacular art museum known as the Fortabat Art Collection, which you’ll visit. This evening, we'll gather to raise a glass to our Presidential Adventure at a Farewell Dinner.

Presidential Feature: Your overnight flight back to the U.S. won’t depart until late in the day, giving us the morning free to board a vintage water taxi for a tour among the islands of the Tigre Delta, a popular getaway destination for porteños. You’ll see houses on stilts, mansions of the Belle Epoque, and English-style rowing clubs. At the conclusion of our tour, we’ll dock at one of the most exclusive of the rowing clubs, where a private lunch will be waiting. Afterwards, return to your hotel room, where we’ve arranged for late checkout, so you can make final preparations for you flight home. If you’re joining us for the post-trip extension to awe-inspiring Iguassu Falls, you’ll stay one more night in the hotel.
