Don’t miss Costa Rica’s famous beaches with this foray into Guanacaste Province. Situated on the country’s Pacific Coast, Guanacaste is beloved by surfers, beach lovers, and thrill seekers alike, and what better way to enhance your family adventure across this Central American paradise than with an extra few days discovering more biodiversity and tropical coastline? Here, your family will enjoy plenty of leisure time to snorkel, bask in the sun, or learn how to surf on gorgeous Playa Hermosa when you’re not adventuring through nearby nature reserves and eco-parks, including a zip-lining excursion through Diamante Eco Adventure Park and a full-day wetlands escapade with a boat cruise down the Tempisque River.
Fly to Costa Rica
Board a flight to Liberia, Costa Rica, today to begin your exciting extension into the tropical paradise of Guanacaste province. After arriving at your hotel, located right on Playa Hermosa, explore the hotel grounds and the beachfront; tonight, you’ll savor a dinner on the beach and a Welcome Briefing that introduces the exciting days to come.
Exploring Diamante Eco Adventure Park and animal sanctuary
After breakfast, we’ll depart for Diamante Eco Adventure Park and its animal sanctuary, which houses Guanacaste’s largest variety of species in one location. Family Feature: Get ready for an exhilarating adventure when we strap ourselves into harnesses and set off on an aerial adventure through Diamante's zip-line course. Dual lines let you ride side-by-side with a companion or your children, and a highlight includes the nearly mile-long ocean-view zip line! Afterward, make your way through lush gardens to the animal sanctuary. Diamante is known for its world-class habitat designs that address the needs of each species, most of which have been rescued by the Costa Rican Ministry of Wildlife or were born in other wildlife management programs for scientific and educational purposes. Your family will learn the stories of these sloths, monkeys, jaguars, toucans, and more, and see how a large team of qualified and dedicated professionals care for them every day. Back at our hotel this afternoon, soak up some rays and get in some quality beach time with an evening at leisure. Dinner is on your own.
Touring the El Viejo Wetlands, Tempisque boat cruise, agua de sapo
An incredible experience awaits us today: the El Viejo Wetlands. This private nature reserve is part of a large, family-owned sugarcane farm and offers 5,000 acres of biodiverse splendor. Cultural Discovery: We’ll learn about local culture and Costa Rican traditions as we enjoy lunch here and tour the grounds while spotting spectacular wildlife, including howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, exotic birds, and more. Family Feature: Board a boat and cruise down the Tempisque River wetlands, all while scouting for more wildlife with your family. This exquisite cultural tour is capped off with a look inside the local sugar industry, beginning with learning how to make “agua de sapo” — toad water — which, thankfully, doesn’t include any actual toads in the ingredients! Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure, with a scenic dinner on the beach tonight.
Caldera explorations on the way to San José
After breakfast, we’ll check out of the hotel and, as we head toward the capital city of San José, we’ll stop for lunch near a local caldera, which you can then explore on your own. You’ll arrive in San José by midafternoon, and join Day 2 of the base program.
